The Science Behind Parallel Sand Ripples in the Desert

Waves and ripples form on the surface of seawater, flowing parallel to one another toward the shore. This beautiful sight is caused by the wind. In the same way, wind creates parallel ripples in desert sand, making it visually striking. It is fascinating to understand the science behind these sand ripples that appear as neatly formed as if crafted with great precision and uniform height.
A desert is essentially an ocean of sand. Strong winds cause the sand to blow, and friction between the particles makes them evenly rounded. When the wind blows, the sand rises, and when the wind slows down, it settles back onto the ground. Because these sand particles rise to similar heights with the wind and settle back down together, they form aligned rows. Fine particles slide over each other like a liquid. When the wind slows, the airborne particles suddenly decelerate while incoming particles push them from behind. This consistent pushing creates regular, parallel ripples. Layer upon layer forms on the ground depending on wind strength. While these ripples may curve, they remain parallel, creating a magnificent sight in the desert.
