Secrets of the Ocean

- "The sea also holds the stories of every ship that never reached the shore. It carries countless memories, secrets, and lessons."
- Janushi Raichura
K esar was born into a loving family in the beautiful coastal town of Mandvi. Her house stood near the vast and unpredictable ocean. Mandvi was known for its beautiful beaches, breathtaking sunsets, and charming reminders of a bygone era- wooden doors with ornate knockers and bustling streets once filled with traders and merchants.
Kesar knew with absolute certainty that she never wanted to live anywhere else. She couldn't imagine giving up the warmth, culture, and hospitality of her hometown.
She spent her mornings at school and walked home with her friends every afternoon, grateful for the gentle warmth of the sun. In the evenings, they played on the beach, keeping a safe distance from the sea. At night, Kesar slept on a cot beside the window, gazing at the star-filled sky.
She had visited a city once or twice, but there was no ocean, hardly any stars, and no children playing joyfully in the sand. It made her appreciate her little town even more- a place that still cherished old Indian values, traditions, and simple pleasures.
One late Sunday evening, her grandmother took her to the beach. Though she was in her late sixties, she was a devoted playwright. Her play about their hometown was famous across the country, especially the scene in which a young man sought the sea's wisdom.
Kesar had never fully understood that scene.
So that evening, she finally asked.
"Why would anyone ask the sea for advice, Dadiji? The sea just stays there. It doesn't move anywhere. What could it possibly know?"
Her grandmother smiled lovingly and pulled Kesar onto her lap as they sat on the damp sand. Every now and then, a gentle wave brushed against Kesar's feet, making her giggle.
"The sea knows far more than you can imagine," her grandmother said softly. "The earliest forms of life began in the sea. For millions of years, every living creature on Earth lived beneath its waters. Even today, there is an entire world under the sea- a world we have barely explored and still do not fully understand."
She picked up a tiny seashell and placed it gently in Kesar's hands.
"The sea also holds the stories of every ship that never reached the shore. It carries countless memories, secrets, and lessons."
Scooping a little seawater into her palms, she continued,
"This water is like a time machine. Every wave carries droplets from another age. Some may have travelled for hundreds of years, while others have journeyed across millions of years. They may even hold tiny traces of creatures that disappeared from the Earth long ago. The sea remembers because it carries everything within it."
Kesar listened in complete awe, watching the moonlight shimmer across the waves. The sea suddenly seemed far more mysterious than she had ever imagined.
Years passed.
When her grandmother died, Kesar's father suggested immersing her ashes in the holy River Ganga.
But Kesar had something else in mind.
One quiet evening, the entire family walked to the shore. Standing before the endless waves, Kesar gently released her grandmother's ashes into the sea- the place where she believed her grandmother's heart truly belonged.
From that day on, Kesar visited the beach whenever she could.
She would sit by the waves, listening to their endless whispers, talking to her grandmother, who had now become a part of that magnificent ocean- a timeless keeper of memories, carrying her love across generations, forever.
