  • Harish Nayak
  • Jimmy Carter with Mother Lillian

The Prize: Celebration in America, Festivities in Haryana!
Before 1947, Mother Lillian lived in Kartarpur. Just as Mother Teresa did charitable work in Kolkata, Mother Lillian performed similar selfless service in Kartarpur.

T here are many people named Kartar in Haryana. You can find as many Kartar Singhs as you want. But an English-sounding name like Carter is quite a surprise, isn't it!
Yes, indeed. You may call it a surprise, but there is a village named Carterpuri in Haryana. This is a story from the year 2002. That year, the village was celebrating a unique festival. The name of that festival was the Carter-Festival, or call it the Nobel-Festival.
A Carter-Nobel-Festival in Haryana's Carterpuri of all places?
Yes, indeed. Because the former President of America, Jimmy Carter, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2002. His full name is James Earl Carter, but he is the only American president whom people addressed by an affectionate and endearing nickname like Jimmy-Jimmy Carter. The amount of the Nobel Prize at that time was one million US dollars.
Jimmy Carter did tremendous work to maintain peace around the world. It is fine that he received the Nobel Prize, but why was there celebration in Haryana over it? And how did a place called Carterpuri come to be in Haryana in the first place?
The answer to this is given by Kartar Singh, the postmaster of that historic village, Carterpuri.
He states that Jimmy Carter's mother was named Lillian Carter. Before India gained independence, that is until 1947, Mother Lillian lived in Kartarpur. Just as Mother Teresa did charitable work in Kolkata, Mother Lillian performed similar selfless service in Kartarpur.
People used to call her Lili-bahen. Lili-bahen contributed greatly to the development of the village-so much so that in her memory, the villagers changed the name of the village from Kartarpur to Carterpuri.
Mother Mrs. Carter helped the village gain a prominent position without any discrimination of caste, creed, or high and low status.
Now, when the son of Lili-bahen-and that too, Carterpuri's own Carter, Jimmy-receives an honor as great as the Nobel Prize, wouldn't the village celebrate? Moreover, when Jimmy Carter was President, he specially visited this place to meet his mother and to share in her work.
Wearing a Haryanvi turban, the American President Jimmy Carter danced here with his mother.
Now then, isn't the celebration in Carterpuri truly fitting and genuine?
