The Tree That Remembered
  • "You have taught us a lesson we should never have forgotten. Big changes begin with small hands and caring hearts."

I n a peaceful little village lived a cheerful girl named Kavya.
Every morning on her way to school, she passed a huge old banyan tree standing quietly beside the village pond. Its thick branches stretched wide like welcoming arms.
Most people walked past without even looking at it.
But not Kavya.
She would always stop for a moment, gently place her hand on its rough trunk, smile, and whisper,
"Good morning, old friend!"
The tree stood silent, its leaves rustling softly in the breeze, as if it were smiling back.
Then came a terrible summer.
The sun blazed day after day.
The pond slowly dried up.
The fields cracked under the scorching heat.
Farmers worried about their crops, birds searched for water, and everyone in the village prayed for rain.
One afternoon, Kavya sat beneath the banyan tree, feeling sad.
As she looked at its wide branches, she remembered something her grandfather had once told her.
"Long ago," he had said, "our village was covered with trees. Birds filled the skies, the air stayed cool, and the ponds never dried up. But as people cut down the trees, they slowly lost the gifts that nature had given them."
Kavya couldn't stop thinking about those words.
The next day, she shared the idea with her school teacher.
The teacher smiled.
"Then let's bring those trees back," she said.
Soon the school started a campaign called "One Child, One Tree."
Every student planted a young sapling.
Each child promised to care for it like a friend.
Some villagers laughed.
"How can these tiny plants solve such a big problem?" they asked.
But the children didn't lose heart.
Every day after school, they carried buckets of leftover household water to the saplings.
They built little fences to protect them from goats and cows.
They pulled out weeds and watched the tiny plants grow leaf by leaf.
The months turned into years.
Slowly, the little saplings became tall, leafy trees.
Green returned to the village.
Birds built nests in the branches.
Butterflies fluttered among colourful flowers.
The soil stayed moist for longer after every rain.
And when the monsoon arrived, something wonderful happened.
The village pond began to fill again.
People smiled as they watched clear water sparkle under the sun.
One evening, the village head called everyone together.
Looking proudly at the children, he said,
"You have taught us a lesson we should never have forgotten. Big changes begin with small hands and caring hearts."
Everyone clapped.
Kavya quietly walked to her favourite banyan tree.
She placed her hand on its trunk once again.
The branches swayed gently in the cool evening breeze.
It almost seemed as though the old tree was saying,
"I never forgot… I was only waiting for you to remember."
Kavya smiled.
She finally understood.
The banyan tree had remembered something people had forgotten-
when we care for nature, nature takes care of us.
From that day on, the old banyan tree was never lonely again.
It stood proudly among hundreds of young trees, watching over a village that had become greener, happier, and full of life once more.
Moral
Every great change begins with one small step. When we protect nature today, we create a healthier and happier tomorrow.
