  • Chandrakant Pathik

The Melodious Cuckoo and the Crafty Fox

  • At the first instance, Surili was tempted. But she had decided that her song was a gift given to others-it could not be exchanged for any material object.
She replied calmly, "My song is a gift received from God; it cannot be sold. I sing for the joy of my brothers and sisters, not for any greed or temptation."

I n the valley of the forest, all the birds and animals lived peacefully. In that valley, there was a particularly precious bird-a small, yellow-colored cuckoo whom the other animals and birds knew as Surili.
Surili started the day every morning with sweet, melodious songs. Her voice was so captivating that the leaves on the trees would sway and even the rivers would slow their flow.
At the other end of the forest lived a fox; he was full of deceit and cunningness. He tried to trap the surrounding animals and birds in his snare. The cunning fox himself tried to sing too, but everyone laughed upon hearing his strange song and pitch. As a result, envy arose in the crafty fox.
"I will trap that Surili cuckoo in such a way that she will sing for me, and after that, I will do something to catch her in a trap."
One day, the crafty fox prepared a strongly scented dish wrapped in leaves. He said to Surili, "Sister Surili, if you sing a special song for me, I will give you a dish of delicious food."
At the first instance, Surili was tempted. But she had decided that her song was a gift given to others-it could not be exchanged for any material object.
She replied calmly, "My song is a gift received from God; it cannot be sold. I sing for the joy of my brothers and sisters, not for any greed or temptation."
One day, the greedy fox fell ill. Everyone ignored him on the side, but Surili went to meet him, sat beside him, and sang a sweet song.
Tears came to the greedy fox's eyes. Weeping, he confessed: "I used to feel that you were completely frail and weak bird; but in reality, you are the strongest and the most loving."
Through Surili's words, we also need to realize that: "A sweet and melodious voice is not a weapon, but a cure. Despite being a small bird, the Surili cuckoo demonstrates a generous heart, patience, and love-setting a high example for us."
Moral
Love and humility are the greatest strength.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger.
