The Lost Crypto Wallet : A Lesson in Greed

- Ravi Ila Bhatt

In the high-rise apartments of Gurgaon, lived Rishi, a man who lived by one motto: "Everything is a hustle." Rishi was a successful freelance consultant, but he was notoriously stingy. He’d argue with delivery riders over a ?5 tip, underpay his interns while boasting about his luxury watch, and was known to "forget" his wallet whenever the bill arrived at group dinners. To Rishi, honesty was just a lack of ambition.

One afternoon, while rushing to a meeting, Rishi dropped a small, high-security hardware wallet (a specialized USB device) containing 50 Bitcoins. When he realized it was gone, he went into a frenzy. He posted all over local WhatsApp groups and Twitter, offering a "massive reward," though in his head, he had no intention of actually paying it.

Three blocks away, in the modest staff quarters, lived Anya, a bright 14-year-old, and her father, Maheshbhai. Maheshbhai worked as a driver for Rishi. While cleaning the car bay, Anya spotted the sleek metallic device on the pavement.

She showed it to her father. "Papa, this looks like that expensive thing Rishi Sir was posting about."

Maheshbhai knew the value of what was in his hand. He wasn't a wealthy man; his daughter’s college fund was barely growing. He could have easily sold the device on the grey market and changed their lives forever. But Maheshbhai looked at Anya and said, "Beta, if we build our house on someone else’s loss, the foundation will always be weak."

They went to Rishi’s penthouse to return the device. Rishi was overjoyed to see it, but as soon as he held it, his greedy mind started clicking. Why should I give this driver a reward? he thought. In fact, maybe I can squeeze even more out of this.

Rishi looked at Maheshbhai with a fake expression of horror. "Wait a minute! This device had 75 Bitcoins logged into the hidden folder. There are only 50 here now! You and your daughter must have hacked the passkey and transferred 25 coins to your own account!"

Maheshbhai was stunned. "Sir, we don’t even know how to use this. My daughter found it, and we came straight to you."

Rishi wouldn't budge. He threatened to call the police, hoping to scare Maheshbhai into giving him "compensation." But Maheshbhai, fueled by the insult to his integrity, refused to back down. They ended up in front of a Cyber-Cell Arbitrator to settle the dispute.

The Arbitrator, a sharp woman named Meera, heard both sides. She asked Anya and Maheshbhai multiple times about the state of the device when they found it. They remained consistent: it was exactly as it was now.

Then she turned to Rishi. "You are absolutely certain, under legal oath, that the wallet you lost contained 75 Bitcoins?"

Rishi nodded aggressively. "Yes, Madam. Exactly 75."

Meera smiled thinly and delivered her verdict:

"Since Mr. Rishi lost a wallet containing 75 Bitcoins, and the wallet found by this young girl contains only 50, it is logically impossible for this to be Rishi's property. This must belong to some other unfortunate person who hasn't reported it yet."

She continued, "Therefore, I order that this device be held in escrow for 30 days. If no one claims a lost wallet of 50 Bitcoins by then, the contents will be legally transferred to Anya as a 'Finder’s Reward' for her exemplary honesty. Mr. Rishi, we will keep an eye out for your wallet with 75 coins. You may leave."

Rishi stood frozen. In his attempt to grab more through lies, he had officially disowned the fortune he actually had.

Moral

Greed often traps itself. When you try to deceive others to gain an unfair advantage, you often end up losing exactly what you were trying to protect. Honesty isn't just a virtue; it's the best insurance policy.
