The Lens of Truth : A Modern-Day Legend

- Ravi Ila Bhatt

In the heart of Mumbai’s glittering tech district lived Rana Sahab, a visionary billionaire and the city’s most eccentric philanthropist. Rana Sahab was a man of immense power, known for funding start-ups and art galleries. But he had two defining traits: he was born with a condition where his left eye was completely closed and covered by skin, and he absolutely loathed "yes-men." If you flattered him falsely, you were out of his circle forever.

One day, Rana Sahab decided he wanted a definitive portrait for his foundation’s headquarters. He put out a call for the best digital artists in India. Out of thousands, three young creators—Aryan, Smriti, and Kabir—were chosen.

Rana Sahab laid down the stakes: "Create a portrait that captures my essence. If you nail it, I’ll fund your entire career. If you fail to be authentic, don't ever expect to work in this industry again."

Aryan was a realist. He created a hyper-realistic digital painting that showed Rana Sahab exactly as he was. However, the way he framed the lighting made the closed eye look like a tragic defect, drawing the viewer's pity rather than respect.

Rana Sahab was insulted. "You’ve turned a ruler into a victim," he said. He blacklisted Aryan from his network for five years for lacking the vision to see the man beyond the disability.

Smriti, used to the world of Instagram filters and AI-enhancements, decided to play it "safe." She painted Rana Sahab with two perfectly symmetrical, shining eyes.

Rana Sahab’s face turned cold. "This is a lie. You’re mocking me with your fake praise, thinking I’m too insecure to face the truth." Smriti was banned from the foundation for his dishonesty and fake gesture.

Kabir spent hours watching Rana Sahab. He noticed the man’s love for the outdoors and his pride in his heritage. When it was his turn, he revealed a stunning portrait of Rana Sahab as a Royal Archer. In the painting, the King was in a dynamic profile pose, aiming an arrow at a target. His left side was turned away, and his right eye was squinted in sharp, powerful focus—the natural pose of an archer taking aim.

Rana Sahab was speechless. Kabir hadn't lied by adding a second eye, nor had he highlighted a disability. He had simply used a clever perspective to show the King at his most powerful.

"You didn't fix me, and you didn't pity me," Rana Sahab smiled. "You found a way to show my strength through the truth." Kabir was awarded a multi-crore grant and became the most sought-after artist in the country.
