Chloroform is used to make patients unconscious so they do not feel pain during surgery. Operations involve cutting, which is very painful; if a patient is conscious, they might struggle or become terrified, so anesthesia is necessary. In the past, surgeries were done without making patients unconscious, leading to many deaths.
James Young Simpson discovered the use of chloroform, which made surgeries much easier. Today, many advanced methods exist to keep a patient unconscious for a specific amount of time, managed by trained professionals called anesthetists.
