Gujarat: ₹4,100 cr lost to fraudsters in last three years

Victims of fraud in Gujarat have lost around ₹4,100 cr in the last three years, as per a statement in the assembly issued on Sept 15.

The fraudsters have been prevalent in all the districts of the state.

9,845 accused nabbed by police; 2,322 on the run

In a question raised in the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha on Sept 15, minister of state for home affairs Harsh Sanghavi stated that in the last three years, nearly ₹4,100 cr worth of fraud and cheating cases were registered by the police in the state.

For that, police have apprehended 9,845 people accused of scamming multiple individuals and institutions.

The statement also mentions that police are yet to get hold of 2,322 people who are currently on the run.

Victims have lost more money in last two years

The numbers released by minister Sanghavi indicate that the victims in the state have lost nearly ₹3,155.5 cr in the last two years, which is nearly three to four times what they lost in 2020-21.

As per the statement, 2020-21 saw fraudsters scamming people for ₹884.36, but the number catapulted to ₹1,583.64 cr in 2021-22, and ₹1,571.86 cr in 2022-23.

Ahmedabad, Surat registered numerous cases in three years

The Ministry of State for Home Affairs has stated that Ahmedabad city registered around 1,500 cases of fraud and cheating, while Surat registered more than 1,200, and the state’s capital, Gandhinagar, saw around 250 cases of the same.

Recent fraud cases in Gujarat

In a recent case in Vadodara, three separate cases of fraud have surfaced, where people were shown dreams of flying abroad, only to be scammed along the way.

In another case last month, an employee duped his company of more than ₹18 lakh in Gandhinagar.

A similar case was unearthed in Ahmedabad, where a Paldi-based visa and tour agency reportedly perpetrated a scam, defrauding a few innocent foreign job aspirants of ₹22 lakh.
