India reports 269 new COVID-19 cases, three deaths

India has logged 269 new COVID-19 cases, and as per the union ministry of health and family welfare today there were three deaths in the past 24 hours.

The total number of active cases further fell to 2,556 from, while until last week more than 3,000 active cases were recorded.

In a concerning development, the JN.1 subvariant of the Omicron strain has swiftly become the dominant variant in Maharashtra.

According to INSACOG, the number of JN.1 cases has crossed 1,000. Karnataka has reported 214 cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand.

The highest number of cases were reported in Maharashtra with 250, followed by Karnataka and Kerala.

Monitoring and further assessment of the situation are ongoing to address the spread of this sub-variant.

Recent genetic studies on coronavirus samples from January reveal that the JN.1 subvariant accounts for nearly all cases in Maharashtra.

INSACOG’s data revealed that 239 Covid cases in December 2023, and 24 in November 2023, were identified with the presence of the JN.1 variant.

India has logged 441 new COVID-19 cases on Jan 13, and as per the ministry of health and family welfare, and there have been no deaths in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases further fell to 3,238 from Jan 8’s 3,919.

As of Jan 11, a total of 827 cases of the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been reported across 12 states in India.

The highest number of cases were reported in Maharashtra with 250, followed by Karnataka with 199, and Kerala with 155.

The union health ministry today said the country reported 605 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths in the last 24 hours.

The four new fatalities were reported from Kerala, Karnataka and Tripura, according to the ministry data.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases further fell to 4,002 from Jan 7’s 4,049.

A total of 682 cases of the JN.1 have been reported from 12 states across the country till Jan 6, according to sources.

A total of 36 cases of JN.1 variant were reported in Gujarat, with the most in Karnataka at 199 cases, followed by 148 in Kerala, 139 in Maharashtra, 47 in Goa, 30 each from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, 26 in Tamil Nadu, 21 in New Delhi, three in Odisha, two in Telangana and one in Haryana.

The Union Health Ministry today said the country reported 756 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths in the last 24 hours. 

The five new fatalities were reported from Maharashtra, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir, according to the Ministry data.

On Jan 6, two deaths were reported from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat while on Jan 5, 12 deaths were reported -- five from Kerala, four from Karnataka, two from Maharashtra, and one from Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases further fell to 4,049 from Saturday's 4,187.

As of now, the total number of coronavirus cases in India, since the initial outbreak in January 2020, has reached 4,50,18,134, while the overall death toll has risen to 5,33,392.

The new JN.1 sub-variant is a descendent of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola, with Kerala being the first state to report a case.

Kerala, Karnataka witnessed JN.1 variant cases, while Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha and Haryana were also affected, as per the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

Data suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing any significant rise in the new cases or hospitalisations and deaths.

These states have collectively reported 619 cases of the sub-variant by Thursday, with Karnataka leading with 199 cases followed by Kerala with 148 cases.

INSACOG's data revealed that 239 COVID-19 cases in December 2023, and 24 in November 2023, were identified with the presence of the JN.1 variant.

The overall recovery from COVID-19 has reached over 4.4 crore individuals, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%.

The union health ministry today said the country reported 774 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in the last 24 hours.

One death due to COVID-19 was reported in Gujarat in 24 hours, while another fatality was reported in Tamil Nadu, according to the Ministry data.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases further fell to 4,187 from Jan 5’s 4,334.

India on Jan 5 recorded 761 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths in the past 24 hours, the union health ministry said.

A dozen new fatalities - five from Kerala, four from Karnataka, two from Maharashtra, and one from UP - were reported in the span of 24 hours, according to the ministry’s data.

On Jan 4, two deaths were reported, one each from Kerala and Karnataka.

Meanwhile, the total number of active cases further fell to 4,334 from Jan 4’s 4,423.

The new variant, JN.1 subvariant is descendent of the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola, with Kerala being the first state to report a case.

Kerala and Karnataka continue to witness JN.1 variant cases, with other affected states being Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha, and Haryana, as per the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).

Kerala has the highest number of active cases at 1,249 in India, followed by Karnataka at 1,240, and Maharashtra at 914. Tamil Nadu’s active cases stand at 190, and Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh at 128 each.

Ahmedabad registered an alarming spike of 21 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours of Dec 31, 2023 (Sunday).

Meanwhile, 24 new cases were reported in Gujarat.

Of the 21 new patients, 15 were men and six were women.

The new cases were registered in the city’s Naranpura, Bodakdev, Jodhpur, Shahibaug, Ghatlodia, Danilimda, Maninagar, Bhaipura, Navarangpura, Paldi, Vasna, Sarkhej, Isanpur, and Khokhra areas.

Eight patients have a travel history to Vadodara, Kutch, Godhra, Mumbai, Kerala, the US, as well as Canada.

Meanwhile, 11 patients have recovered from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours on Sunday.

This spike shot up the currently active case tally to 60 in Ahmedabad. One patient is currently in the hospital, while 59 are under treatment in home isolation.

Gujarat currently has a total of 79 active COVID-19 cases.

Since Dec 24, 2023, Ahmedabad has had 33 active cases, while there were 54 in the state. Which have spiked to 60 active COVID-19 cases in the city, doubling last week’s figures.

Cases in India

Among states with the most active COVID-19 cases, Kerala is at the top with 2,082, Karnataka at second with 833, Maharashtra at third with 613, Tamil Nadu at fourth with 177, and Andhra Pradesh at fifth with 83, while Gujarat is sixth.

Ahmedabad registered two cases of COVID-19 of a man and a woman from Sarkhej and Ranip areas of the city respectively.

An 82-year-old woman from Dariyapur area, who was undergoing treatment for COVID-19, has passed away. Sources have revealed that the old woman was undergoing treatment in the city’s Aksharkrupa hospital, and was also reported to have comorbidities.

There are currently 35 active COVID-19 cases in the city. While one patient is undergoing treatment in a private hospital, 34 patients are in home isolation.

According to the chief medical officer, Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Dr Bhavin Solanki, 14 patients have been registered in the western zone and 11 in the north-western zone.

Most of the patients in the age group of 15 to 70 years who have tested positive have had a travel history. Besides, most of the patients have taken two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, and some have also taken a booster dose.

A 30 bed isolation ward for male and female COVID-19 patients has been set up in the city’s SVP Hospital. Rapid antigen testing has also been started at all the urban health centres.

Five new COVID-19 cases were registered in Ahmedabad on Dec 25 (Monday), with areas like Khadia and Dariyapur of the Eastern part registering new cases.

Other areas where cases were reported on Monday include Bodakdev and Naranpura.

This surge has brought the total active cases count in the city to 35, with two patients undergoing treatment at hospitals. Two patients among the new ones have a travel history to Bengaluru.

A total of three patients were discharged after recovering from COVID-19.

Nationwide COVID-19 cases

Nationwide 628 fresh cases of COVID-19 cases were recorded on Dec 25, crossing the 4,000-mark, as per the union health ministry.

According to the ministry of health and family welfare, as many as 4,054 active COVID-19 cases were reported in the past 24 hours on Monday, compared to 3,742 on Sunday (Dec 24).

The health ministry said that one death was reported from Kerala on Dec 25, where the COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 was first detected, pushing the nationwide death toll to 5,33,334.

Five more positive cases of COVID-19 were registered in Ahmedabad on Dec 23, from areas like Thaltej, Maninagar, Navrangpura and Gota.

The patients include three males and two females. Among the infected, one has been shifted to hospital for treatment, while the remaining 21 patients are in home isolation.

One patient has a travel history to Delhi and one to Surendranagar.

Currently, there are 22 active COVID-19 cases in the city.

New cases in Gujarat

12 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Gujarat in the last 24 hours on Dec 23.

With this surge, the number of active cases in the state has increased to 44. 

Exactly a week ago, the state had only five active cases.

As per the information from the health department, a patient has also recovered from COVID-19 in Gujarat in the last 24 hours.

Nationwide, Gujarat ranks sixth among the states with the highest number of active cases. With the highest number of active cases, Kerala is tops at 2,872, Karnataka is second with 175, Tamil Nadu is third with 117, Maharashtra is fourth with 68, and Odisha is fifth with 54.

Daily COVID-19 cases were once again reported across the state amidst the looming threat of a new variant, JN.1.

Ahmedabad registered six new COVID-19 cases on Dec 22 in areas like Navrangpura, Bodakdev, and Thaltej in the city’s western part.

One of the patients has a travel history of Singapore, while the other travelled to Maharashtra’s Pune.

Currently, the city has 18 active coronavirus cases, all of whom are under home isolation. Four of the patients are male, and two are female.

With the addition of new cases in the city’s western part, areas that have registered COVID-19 cases till now include Jodhpur, Paldi, Ghatlodiya, Navrangpura, Naranpura, Thaltej, and Sarkhej.

New cases in Gujarat

Ahmedabad contributed six out of the total nine new cases registered throughout the state in the last 24 hours, as reported on Dec 22.

The addition of these new cases has shot up the number of active cases in the state to 32. As of Dec 21, the state had 23 active cases.

Till now, Gujarat has registered a total of 12.91 lakh COVID-19 cases since the spread of the virus. In these cases, 12.80 lakh patients have recovered, while 11,080 have died.

As per medical practitioners, the surge is not a matter of worry. Dr Mukesh Maheshwari of the Ahmedabad Medical Association said, “Any person facing cold-fever-headache-like issues for a long period should get tested as per a doctor’s advice.”

Nationwide COVID-19 spread

Gujarat has retained its fifth position in the country in most active cases, as nationwide, 640 new cases were registered in the last 24 hours on Dec 22, according to the union health ministry.

This surge has brought the total active cases in the country to 2,997 from 2,669 on Dec 21.

A death in Kerala due to COVID-19 brought the total deaths registered in India to around 5.33 lakh.

Till now, India has registered a total of 4.50 cr COVID-19 cases. While the total number of patients recovered from COVID-19 is currently at 4.44 cr.

Kerala still ranks the highest in terms of active cases, at 2,606. Followed by Karnataka at 105, Tamil Nadu at 104, and Odisha and Maharashtra, with both at 53.
