ન્હાનાલાલ કવિ હતા કે ક્રિકેટના ખેલાડી?

• હવે બન્યું એવું એવું એ સરદારજીની ટીમ તરફથી કવિ ન્હાનાલાલને રમવાનું મળ્યું. તેમને રમતનું ભાન હતું જ અને રમતાંય આવડતું હતું. એટલું જ નહિ, રણજિતસિંહ અને ટર્નર સામે કવિએ ઓલ રાઉન્ડર સુંદર રમત બતાવી.

મ હારાજા સયાજીરાવ રાજકોટ ગયા ત્યારે કવિશ્રી ન્હાનાલાલને મળવાનુ થયું. સયાજીરાવ તો ન્હાનાલાલને કવિ તરીકે જ ઓળખતા હતા પણ કવિશ્રીએ કહ્યું કે, 'મહારાવજી! આપ મને ક્રિકેટર તરીકે પણ ઓળખી શકો છો.'
નવાઈ લાગી મહારાજાને. તેમણે પૂછ્યું, 'આપ ક્રિકેટ પણ રમો છો?'
કવિ કહે, 'ક્રિકેટને લઈને સ્તો આજે હું આ પોસ્ટ ઉપર છું.'
મહારાજાની ઈચ્છા થતાં કવિશ્રીએ, પોતાના જીવનનો એ પ્રસંગ વર્ણવી બતાવ્યો, જે નીચે પ્રમાણે છે - ત્યારે કવિ ન્હાનાલાલ સાદરા સ્કોટ કોલેજમાં પ્રોફેસર હતા. ૧૯૦૧ની સાલમાં મુંબઈથી એમ.એ.ની પદવી મેળવવાથી તેમને સાદરા કોલેજની એ નોકરી મળી હતી.
ત્યારના રિવાજ મુજબ તેમને નેવું રૂપિયા પગાર મળતો હતો, જે એક રીતે સારો કહી શકાય.
પણ ત્યારે રાજકોટની રાજકુમાર કોલેજ ટીમ સાદરામાં મેચ રમવા આવી. રાજકોટની ટીમમાં ત્યારે અઠંગ ખેલાડીઓ રણજિતસિંહ તથા ટર્નર પણ હતા.
હવે બન્યું એવું એવું એ સરદારજીની ટીમ તરફથી કવિ ન્હાનાલાલને રમવાનું મળ્યું. તેમને રમતનું ભાન હતું જ અને રમતાંય આવડતું હતું. એટલું જ નહિ, રણજિતસિંહ અને ટર્નર સામે કવિએ ઓલ રાઉન્ડર સુંદર રમત બતાવી.
જામ રણજિત તેમનાથી એટલા તો પ્રભાવિત થયા કે તેમને સાદરાથી ઉઠાવી રાજકોટ લઈ ગયા અને તેમને રાજ્યના શિક્ષણાધિકારીનું પદ અર્પણ કરી દીધું. પગાર ખાસ્સો બસો ને ત્રીસ રૂપિયા.
કવિએ ઉપરોક્ત પ્રસંગનું સ્વમુખે વર્ણન કરતાં કહ્યું, 'મને શિક્ષણ કરતાં રમતાં રમતગમતે વધુ કમાણી આપી છે.'
તરત જ સયાજીરાવે માર્મિક રીતે કહ્યું 'હું અત્યારે શિક્ષણાધિકારીને મળી રહ્યો છું કે રમતાધિકારીને?'
અલબત્ત કવિશ્રીએ ત્યારે કવિતાની તેમની કમાણી કેટલી હતી, એ વિષેનો ઉલ્લેખ કર્યો ન હતો.

Nhanalal: Was He a Poet or a Cricket Player?
Now what happened was that poet Nhanalal got to play for Sardarji's team.
He certainly had an understanding of the game and knew how to play. Not only that, the poet displayed a wonderful all-round performance against Ranjitsinhji and Turner.

W hen Maharaja Sayajirao went to Rajkot, he happened to meet the poet Nhanalal.
Sayajirao knew Nhanalal only as a poet, but the poet said, "Maharaavji! You can recognize me as a cricketer as well."
The Maharaja was surprised. He asked, "Do you play cricket too?"
The poet replied, "It is because of cricket that I am in this post today."
At the Maharaja's wish, the poet described that incident of his life, which is as follows:
At that time, poet Nhanalal was a professor at Sadra Scott College.
He had secured that job at Sadra College after obtaining his M.A. degree from Mumbai in the year 1901.
According to the custom of those days, he received a salary of ninety rupees, which could be considered good in a way.
However, the Rajkumar College team of Rajkot came to Sadra to play a match.
The Rajkot team at that time included veteran players like Ranjitsinhji and Turner.
Now what happened was that poet Nhanalal got to play for Sardarji's team.
He certainly had an understanding of the game and knew how to play. Not only that, the poet displayed a wonderful all-round performance against Ranjitsinhji and Turner.
Jam Ranjit was so impressed by him that he picked him up from Sadra, took him to Rajkot, and offered him the post of the State Educational Inspector. The salary was a substantial two hundred and thirty rupees.
Describing the above incident in his own words, the poet said, "Sports gave me more earnings than teaching."
Immediately, Sayajirao remarked humorously/wittily, "Am I currently meeting the Educational Inspector or the Sports Inspector?"
Of course, the poet did not mention at that time how much his earnings were from poetry.
