  • Harish Nayak

True Strength

W hen compassion (Daya) and bliss (Anand) come together, Dayanand is formed. Dayanand became a great saint.
He was an advocate of vegetarianism.
He considered non-vegetarianism an absolute sin.
As the rule of the British grew, meat-eating increased. The prestige of eating meat spread among the people. Meat-eaters began considering themselves superior and powerful.
Once, Dayanandji's discourse was going on. A British officer arrived at that place. He listened to Dayanandji's words.
Dayanandji's speech came to an end.
The Britisher said: "Maharaj! The body appears powerful. Is the mind just as strong? And is this physical strength from leafy vegetables, or from something else?"
The Britisher said many such things to the saint. Dayanandji understood the mockery.
When it was time, the Britisher began to leave. He sat in his horse carriage. He whipped the horse.
But the horse did not budge an inch. It merely neighed. By no means would it move forward.
Finally, the Britisher looked back.
He was astonished.
Saint Dayanand was standing there holding the carriage. He held onto the carriage firmly. How could the carriage move? How could the horse even pull it?
The Britisher said: "You, Saint? What are you doing?"
Dayanandji said: "I am answering your questions. We do not have the habit of engaging in pointless arguments. But you can see this body and this mind. Both are filled with strength. Behold the greatness of vegetarianism for yourself. The horse that pulls you is also a vegetarian. This man, who stops both you, your horse, and your carriage, is also a vegetarian. Vegetarianism is a calm strength, a non-violent strength. Meat-eating is the strength of hunting and fighting."
The glory of vegetarianism reached the Britisher. He gave up meat-eating. He took a vow to remain a vegetarian for life. He became a companion of compassion and bliss.
