- Chandrakant Pathik
Elephant Uncle Wins
M any days had passed since the flood. The forest was green again, but a new discussion was taking place across the entire forest. The old Lion King had grown very old. He decided that it was time to choose a new leader for the forest.
One morning, all the animals gathered under a huge banyan tree. The Lion King said, "Friends, we need to choose a new leader now. But the leader must be someone who serves everyone."
Hearing this, many animals got excited. Shanu the Fox immediately stood up and said, "If I become the leader, everyone will get sweet fruits every day!"
All the small animals were happy. Then the Wolf spoke up, "If I become the leader, I will host the biggest celebration in the whole forest."
Everyone applauded. Then Elephant Uncle stood up. He calmly said, "I do not make big promises. But if you give me this responsibility, I will listen to everyone and try my best to serve you all."
Silence fell over the gathering. Chiku the Rabbit was sitting with his friends. Manku the Monkey softly asked, "Friend, who should become the leader?"
Chiku replied, "Not the one who makes the most promises, but the one who takes on the most responsibility."
In the days leading up to the election, the Fox put up colorful posters, and the Wolf gave big speeches. But Elephant Uncle continued serving everyone as usual. If water got collected somewhere, he helped clear it. If an elderly animal was in trouble, he took care of them.
One day, Manku saw Elephant Uncle carrying an injured squirrel on his back to the doctor. "Why aren't you preparing for the election?" Manku asked. Elephant Uncle smiled and said, "Service itself is my preparation."
The election day arrived. All the animals of the forest came to vote. Grandfather Owl and Grandfather Turtle were managing the election. In the evening, the vote counting began, and everyone was eager to know the result.
Finally, the results were announced. Elephant Uncle won by a huge majority! The entire ground echoed with applause. Shanu the Fox was a bit disappointed, but Elephant Uncle walked up to him and said, "Friend, the forest needs you too. Come, let us work together."
The Fox realized his mistake. He understood that leadership is not about acquiring power, but about serving others.
That evening, Grandfather Owl told the young ones:
False promises do not last long.
A true leader listens to everyone.
Only the one who serves becomes a real leader.
Leadership does not mean just walking ahead of others, but walking together with everyone.
True leadership lies in service, not in power.
The one who lives for the well-being of others is the true leader.
