The Discoverer of Radioactivity Antoine Henri Becquerel

Some metals give off energy all the time because the atoms in their nucleus are unstable. This energy is called radiation, and such materials are known as radioactive substances.
Radioactivity was discovered by the French scientist Antoine Henri Becquerel. Later, scientists like Ernest Rutherford and Marie Curie carried out further research in this field. Becquerel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for his discovery.
Henri Becquerel was born in Paris, France, on December 15, 1852. His father and grandfather were also scientists. After completing his schooling at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, he studied at the École Polytechnique.
In 1892, he was appointed to an important position at the National Museum of Natural History. He also worked as an engineer in the government's bridges and roads department. In 1896, while carrying out experiments on uranium salts and other materials, Becquerel discovered radioactivity. He also found that uranium continuously emits radiation without any outside source of energy. In 1903, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Marie Curie.
Besides the Nobel Prize, Becquerel received several other honours, including the Rumford Medal, the Helmholtz Medal, and the Barnard Medal.
He died on August 25, 1908. It is believed that his long exposure to radioactive materials during his experiments may have affected his health and contributed to his early death.
