Research on viruses that cause diseases in humans has been extremely useful in the medical world. Following the discovery of viruses, many scientists conducted in-depth research and achieved significant results. Among these scientists, Australian scientist Mac Burnet was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research.
Mac Burnet's full name was Frank Macfarlane Burnet. He was born on September 3, 1899, in Traralgon, Australia. His father was a bank manager. Traralgon was a small village nestled among forests. Young Burnet loved wandering in the forest. He would catch various insects and study them. After completing his primary education at a local Victoria school, he joined Geelong College. In 1917, Burnet studied medicine at Melbourne University. He had a deep interest in Darwin's theory of evolution.
After graduating in medicine and surgery in 1922, he joined Melbourne Hospital as a pathologist. He conducted extensive research on typhoid. In 1925, he went to England and obtained a Ph.D. degree from the University of London. Upon returning to Australia, he joined the Eliza and Walter Hall Institute as its head. He conducted research on viral diseases in humans and animals. His research made the process of creating vaccines for viral diseases easier. He was also a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO). He passed away on August 31, 1985.
