Maharashtra's 5,000 Year Old Lake: Lonar Crater

Meteor showers occur on Earth from outer space. Sometimes, when a heavy meteor strikes the Earth, it creates a deep crater. Over time, a lake forms inside such a crater, and these lakes hold many unique features.
Lonar Lake, located in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, was formed by a meteor impact around 5,000 years ago. Today, it is a saltwater lake. Lonar Lake is perfectly circular—bowl-shaped with a diameter of 3,900 feet at the top and 5,900 feet at the bottom. Numerous scientific institutions around the world have studied this lake.
Around Lonar Lake stand several temples built in the 6th century, main among them being the Daitya Sudan Temple, Kamlaja Devi Temple, and Gomukh Temple. Interestingly, surrounding the lake is a outer ring of tamarind trees, followed by a row of date palms, and then a row of acacia trees.
