  • Chandrakant Pathik

The Little Engineer of the Forest

“Hey! Where is that loud sound coming from?”
Parth, a Class 6 student, had gone to visit a wildlife sanctuary with his father. As soon as they reached the riverbank, he heard a continuous thap… thap… thap… sound.
He looked through his binoculars and saw a large pile of logs, branches and mud in the middle of the river.
“Papa, who could have built this?”
The forest guard smiled and said, “Come, let us go closer. Today, you are going to meet the cleverest engineer in the forest.”
After walking a little further, they saw two brown-coloured animals in the water. They were cutting small branches with their strong teeth and arranging them in the water.
“These are beavers,” the forest guard said. “There are very few animals in the world that build dams on water to make their homes.”
Parth's eyes widened with amazement.
“Can an animal also be an engineer?”
“Yes,” said the forest guard. “Beavers use wood, stones and mud to build dams in rivers. This slows down the flow of water and creates a small pond around the dam. Their homes remain safe there.”
Parth watched carefully. One beaver dived into the water and brought back a stick. Another placed it exactly where it was needed. The two seemed to be working as if they were following a plan.
Parth asked, “Does someone teach them how to do this?”
“No,” said the forest guard. “God has given every living creature some amazing natural ability. Beavers learn to do this naturally from birth.”
After some time, it began to rain. The water level in the river rose, but the beaver's dam remained strong.
Parth wrote in his notebook:
“To do good work, intelligence must be accompanied by patience.”
When he returned to school, the science teacher told the students, “Next week, we will have an exhibition on the theme ‘Engineers of Nature.’”
All the children began choosing one animal or another.
Parth made a beautiful chart about the beaver. He drew pictures, explained how the dam was built, and wrote that humans, too, had learned many things from nature.
On the day of the exhibition, all the children stood in front of Parth's chart and read it with amazement.
The principal said, “Today we have understood that knowledge is not found only in books. Nature is also a great teacher.”
Parth won the first prize, but he said,
“This prize belongs to the little engineer of the forest—the beaver.”
Everyone burst into laughter, and the entire hall echoed with a thunderous round of applause.
