Oxygen is widely known as the basis of life for all living beings. Life on Earth originated precisely because oxygen was present in the atmosphere. Oxygen also has several other effects: the rusting of metals, its role in combustion whenever something burns, and its necessity in generating energy. All these discoveries were made by a scientist named Antoine Lavoisier. He contributed significantly to the foundations of chemistry.
Lavoisier was born on August 26, 1743, into a wealthy family in Paris. At a college in Paris, he studied chemistry, botany, and mathematics. He was a keen student of every field of science and became a leading member of the French Academy of Sciences.
Lavoisier earned worldwide fame through his crucial discoveries regarding oxygen. He was also active in politics. In 1794, a political revolution took place in France. Lavoisier was labeled a rebel and sentenced to death. On May 8, 1794, he was executed, bringing a tragic end to the life of a great scientist.
