At What Height Does Space Begin?

Space research is a fascinating field. We often hear that rockets, missiles and satellites are launched into space. But have you ever wondered where space actually begins?
There is no visible border between Earth and space. However, Earth is surrounded by layers of air called the atmosphere. To understand it better, scientists divide the atmosphere into different layers.
The first layer, called the troposphere, extends from Earth's surface up to about 15 kilometres. This is where clouds, mountains, rainbows and weather occur. Rain, storms and strong winds all take place in this layer.
Above it is the stratosphere, which extends up to about 65 kilometres. The air here is thinner and calmer. The ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays, is found in this layer. Above the stratosphere is the ionosphere, which extends to about 400 kilometres above Earth. Many satellites orbit within this region. Even so, scientists generally do not consider this to be outer space. Beyond 400 kilometres, the air becomes extremely thin. Spacecraft and satellites no longer experience noticeable air resistance. For this reason, many people consider space to begin at around 400 kilometres above Earth's surface.
All these layers of the atmosphere move along with the Earth as it rotates.
