A Brother's Gift

  • This is a story from abroad. There was a young boy. Once, he went out for a walk in the market. His little sister was with him.
  • The brother loved his little sister dearly. In the market, the brother was showing various new things to his little sister and explaining whatever she did not understand.
  • Meanwhile, they came across a clothing shop. Right by the door of the shop, there was a glass showcase. In that showcase, newly styled clothes, hats, and other items were on display. Seeing a hat meant for girls, the sister stopped walking. She simply kept staring at that hat.
  • The brother was sensible. It didn't take him long to understand that his sister liked this hat very much. He also stopped and asked the shopkeeper, "Brother, what is the price of this hat?"
  • The shopkeeper stated the price. The brother took out money from his pocket. Upon counting, the amount was about five dollars short of the price. He said, "Sister, wait here for a little while, I will be right back."
  • Saying this, he ran off. About an hour later, he came running back in the same way. He paid the price of that hat to the shopkeeper and bought the hat. The sister was overjoyed to wear that hat.
  • Coming out of the shop, the sister asked, "Brother, where did you bring the remaining money from?"
  • The brother said, "I was running around worrying about where to get the money from. On the way, there was an inn where a gentleman stood holding the reins of his horse. He was looking around. I felt that he wanted to go inside the hotel to eat, but was worried about where to keep the horse. So I said, 'Sir, let me hold your horse.' He immediately handed the reins of the horse to me. Finishing his work in a little while, that gentleman came out. He gave me five dollars for my labor."
  • The name of that boy who did such labor for the sake of his sister was George Stephenson.
  • When he grew up, he became a scientist and inventor. He invented the steam locomotive engine and built the world's very first railway train.
