Gregor Mendel: Pioneer of Genetics

- વિશ્વના વિજ્ઞાનીઓ
The structure and characteristics of human, animal, and plant bodies are inherited. Every living organism has its own lineage. The study of this field is called Genetics. Gregor Mendel laid the foundation for this science. His discovery was later followed by the discovery of genes and DNA. This research made the treatment of many diseases possible and established genetics as a separate branch of science.
Mendel was born on July 20, 1822, in Austria. In his childhood, he worked to tend to fields and gardens. He began his career after receiving higher education in Philosophy and Physics at Olomouc University. He studied the research being done on plant lineage in the university's Natural History department and, at the same time, became a priest. After becoming a priest, he was given the name Gregor.
He joined the Church in Vienna as a priest. While at St. Thomas Church, he continued his research by breeding bees and plants. He grew about 29,000 pea plants and discovered that they maintain specific rules of inheritance, which he detailed in a research paper.
Initially, he was criticized, and his ideas were not accepted by anyone. He passed away on January 6, 1884. It was only after 1900, when much research was conducted in the field of biology, that Mendel's findings were proven correct, and his principles were accepted worldwide.
