Vaccines are given to prevent diseases caused by viruses. Injuries from iron objects can also cause a fatal disease called Tetanus. The vaccine for Diphtheria, which affects children, was discovered by Emil von Behring.

Behring is considered a pioneer of vaccine science. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1901 for his discovery of the Diphtheria vaccine. He became famous as the "Saviour of Children."

Von Behring was born on March 15, 1854, in the village of Hansdorf, Prussia (Germany). His father was a teacher, and he had 12 siblings. After primary school, he joined the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy in Berlin as a military doctor. He noticed that soldiers often developed Tetanus after being hit by bullets.

Behring conducted deep studies on Tetanus and Diphtheria. After testing on horses, pigs, and goats, he conducted human trials in 1892 and discovered the first Diphtheria vaccine. Later, he was appointed as a professor at Marburg University, where he served for the rest of his life. He also founded his own vaccine manufacturing company, which remains a leading global company today. He passed away on March 31, 1917.
