After the invention of the computer, the invention of its mouse is also significant. Used for clicking, this device comes in various small and large shapes. The mouse is widely known, as are its design and functions. However, when it was first invented, it was not like today's mouse. In 1967, a scientist named Engelbart built a mouse with wooden wheels. He gave it the long name "X-Y Position Indicator." Later, it came to be known as the "mouse."
Douglas Engelbart was born on January 30, 1925, in the US state of Oregon. After completing his higher education at a school in Portland, he entered the field of computing. After serving as a radar technician in the US military for two years, he began studying electrical engineering in Oregon. In 1955, he earned a PhD from UC Berkeley and joined the university as a professor. Sometime later, he joined the Stanford Research Institute for research work, during which he invented the mouse.
Engelbart made several revolutionary inventions in computing and received numerous honors and awards. In 1988, he founded the Engelbart Institute to begin educational initiatives, an institution that continues to provide higher education in computing today. Later in his career, he held senior positions at the Stanford Research Institute in California. He passed away on July 2, 2013.
