- Chandrakant Pathik
The Forest's Science Laboratory
T here was a green forest. Many animals lived there-a lion, an elephant, a peacock, a sparrow, a squirrel, and a little kangaroo. They all played every day, but one day an idea occurred to the sparrow: "Hey friends, how wonderful it would be if we learned science! Come, let's start a laboratory in the forest."
The lion king gave his approval: "Yes, this is a great idea. Science will help us understand nature."
The elephant said: "I will conduct water experiments."
The peacock said: "I will conduct light experiments."
The squirrel said: "I will conduct sound experiments."
The kangaroo said: "I will conduct energy experiments."
Experiment 1: Density of Water
The elephant took a glass filled with water. He dropped a piece of wood into it-it floated. Then he dropped an iron key-it sank.
The sparrow explained: "Children, this is called density. An object lighter than water will float, and one heavier than water will sink."
Experiment 2: Dispersion of Light
The peacock took a glass prism. When sunlight fell upon it, a colorful rainbow appeared.
In wonder, the children said: "Oh, this is magic!"
The peacock said: "This is science. The colors of light separate and become visible."
Experiment 3: Sound Waves
The squirrel tapped on the branches of a tree. The sound traveled far away.
The sparrow said: "Sound spreads through waves. When we speak, the air vibrates."
The children understood that sound, too, is science.
Experiment 4: Harnessing Energy
The kangaroo made a small lamp powered by sunlight.
Delighted, the children said: "Oh, this is solar energy!"
The kangaroo said: "The sun gives us energy. If we make use of it, life becomes easier."
The Light of the Almighty
Evening fell. The moonlight shone bright.
The sparrow said: "Children, just as science helps us understand nature, God gives us the light of life."
The sparrow shared this verse from the scriptures: "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the light of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
With deep devotion, the children folded their hands and prayed to God.
