India ranks 93rd for corruption in 2023, eight places worse than last year

India has slipped eight ranks further in a global civil society corruption report for 2023, standing at 93rd among 180 nations.

Transparency International unveiled the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) on Jan 30 which listed the world’s corrupt countries.

The report ranks the countries based on the corruption in their respective public sectors.

The rankings are decided based on scores ranging from 0 to 100, with 0 being the most corrupt and 100 being a clean operating system.

India scored 40 in 2023’s index in terms of corruption, compared to 39 in 2022.

The report, however, states that, “India shows score fluctuations small enough that no firm conclusions can be drawn on any significant change. However, ahead of the elections, India sees further narrowing of civic space, including through the passage of a bill that could be a grave threat to fundamental rights.”

China, which has been in the news for its aggressive retaliation towards corrupt officers, having tried 37 lakh of them over a decade, ranked 76th in this report.

Among other neighbours of India, Pakistan, a country ridden with inflation and recession, was ranked 133rd in this list, improving from its 140th rank last year. Economically distressed Sri Lanka was ranked 115th, while Bangladesh ended up in 149th place.

The index reflects a rise in corruption throughout the globe, as two-thirds of the countries scored below 50 out of 100 in this index.

The global average lies somewhere around 43 this year.
