A man has been arrested in Gujarat’s Amreli for spreading fake news of a terror attack in Ahmedabad on Jan 13 and 14.
Shrenik Shah, 27, has been booked by Amreli police for sending fake news messages to his relatives on WhatsApp.
The message contained a rumour of an attack to take place in Ahmedabad on the Uttarayan days and advised people to leave the city.
Police has confiscated government IDs and other materials from the accused and launched a probe against him.
Accused sent fake messages to relatives
As per the police, Shah lives in Amreli and works as a car designer. He intended to spread terror by circulating a viral message on the internet.
He initiated a viral WhatsApp message and sent it to his relatives living in Ahmedabad’s Changodar and other areas. The message was sent with an image of ‘Ashok Stambh’ with ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and ‘Government of India’ written below.
The viral message read, “Terrorist attack in Ahmedabad on 13th to 14th. Immediately leave Ahmedabad; those residing in their houses are also under threat.”
Police nabs man behind fake messages
The police investigation also found fake ID cards and documents with the accused.
Amreli police confiscated total goods worth ₹3.45 lakh, which included a car, printer, mobile phone, and laptop.
The accused was found to have destroyed the SIM card used to spread the fake messages.
Forged official government documents
Alongside the belongings, an official reference letter reading ‘Government of India - Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways’ with minister Nitin Gadkari’s signature and the prime minister’s official mark and digital signature below was found. A letter from the USA’s White House was also found with Shah.
The car seized by the police from Shah’s residence belonged to his father, Sandeep Shah.
A sign of ‘The Government of India’ was written on its front. Alongside, a Government of India dinner pamphlet with a BJP symbol was found on the driver’s seat of the car.
Other than that, 165 letters with fake signatures of the PM, union minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, chief minister Bhupendra Patel, and Amreli’s MP were found in the car.
All these letters were printed by him through a software on his laptop.
