The nuisance of narcotics in Gujarat, even after proactive initiatives by the authorities, have reared its head many times. So much so, that just in 2022, Gujarat saw 27,837 kg of cocaine, cannabis, and opium-based drugs worth a staggering ₹5,225 cr being seized across the state.
The data was released on Dec 3 by the National Crime and Records Bureau’s (NCRB) district wise special and local laws (SLL) crimes - 2022 [the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 - possession of drugs for personal use/consumption and possession of drugs for trafficking].
Among the seized packages,12,838 kg were opium-based drugs, 14,899 kg were cannabis-based drugs, and 39.1 kg of cocaine.
Gujarat’s 1,600 km-long coastline was exploited by drug mafias to carry out their illicit trades.
Drug busts in 2022 in numbers
In the past three years, 528 people have been arrested for consuming drugs in the state. 117 arrests were made in 2020, 200 in 2021, and 211 in 2022.
Out of these, one minor was arrested in drug busts in 2020, two in 2021, and three were arrested in 2022.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,350 people were arrested for supplying drugs over the past three years, with 343 arrested in 2020, 479 in 2021, and 528 in 2022.
In 2022, 467 cases of various drug busts were registered across the state, of which 734 accused have been held. Out of these, most of the cases were registered in Ahmedabad.
The seized drugs, totalling up to 27,947 kg, are valued at a staggering ₹5,255.31 cr.
According to a study, 2.36 lakh men and 1.49 lakh women were reported to have been consuming drugs in the state.
In 2020, 11,725 kg of drugs were seized under the Narcotics, Drugs, and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Now those figures have increased threefold in three years since then.
Nationwide, Rajasthan tops the country with the most amount of seized opium-based drugs, i.e., 1.46 lakh kg.
While Uttar Pradesh tops the list of cannabis-based drug busts in the country with 10.30 lakh kg.
