Special arrangements are being put in the place, said S Jaishankar

Updated: Oct 11th, 2023

Indians who are stuck in Israel have been extended help from the external affairs minister S Jaishankar, who announced the launch of 'Operation Ajay' to bring back the Indian citizens stuck in the war-torn country.

In his tweet on X, he wrote, Launching #OperationAjay to facilitate the return from Israel of our citizens who wish to return. He also added that special charter flights and other arrangements are being put in place.

India’s recent rescues

In recent times, India has conducted many such rescue missions, such as ‘Operation Ganga’ to bring Indians stuck in war-torn Ukraine in 2022, ‘Operation Devi Shakti’ to extract Indians out of Afghanistan in 2021, and ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back the Indians from conflict-affected Sudan.

Indians in Israel

According to multiple sources, there are approximately 18,000-20,000 Indians in Israel. On Oct 10, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had written to the Jaishankar to intervene for the 7,000 Keralites stuck in Israel.

Apart from Karalites, there are also reportedly more than 1,000 Gujaratis in Israel, anxious to come back home.

India has openly extended its support to Israel in the war against terrorism.

The echoes of the conflict could be heard back home, too, as a TV actor, Madhura Naik, a jew of Indian origin, announced today that her cousin sister and brother-in-law were killed in Israel. On Oct 10, Hindi cinema actor Nushrratt Bharuccha also shared her ordeal of being stuck on Oct 7-8 in Israel, when the conflict broke out.

The war enters its fifth day

As the Israel-Hamas conflict entered the fifth day, both sides continued their offence on each other, with the addition of the Lebanese group, Hezbollah. The group today claimed to have launched precision missiles on Israel.

Dozens of rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel on the early morning of Oct 7, with sirens sounding across southern Israel that were also heard in the capital, Tel Aviv. Reacting to the attack, Israel's PM Netanyahu declared the country in the ‘state of war’.

Multiple reports point to a death toll of over 1,200 lives on both sides, with over 5,000 injured.
