In a shocker, a 23-year-old killed his grandparents and uncle at their house in Middlesex County, New Jersey, on Nov 27.

Yash Brahmbhatt (38) was shot dead by his nephew, Om who then also went on to murder his grandparents, Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt.

Dilipkumar retired as a sub-inspector of Gujarat police. The Brahmbhatts originally belonged to Bakrol in Gujarat’s Anand.

Om who also hails from Anand went to the US to live with his maternal uncle Yash (his mother Rinku’s brother) and maternal  grandparents. He allegedly became addicted to drugs and was sent to a rehabilitation centre thereafter. However, when that did not yield any results, Om was sent back to Anand.

His uncle, however, emphasised the need to settle him in the US, taking him back to the States.

Nephew shot his uncle, grandparents

On the night of Nov 27, Om came home with a handgun and shot his uncle. He then proceeded to shoot his grandparents when they came out of the bedroom hearing the gunfire.

As per local media reports, Om called 911 emergency services after shooting them and confessed to the police, “It might be me” when officers arrived.

According to reports, Om bought the gun online, as stated in the criminal complaint filed.

The grandparents had died on the spot, while Yash was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

Anand-based Brahmbhatt family

The Brahmbhatt family was from Anand, a district in Gujarat that is famous for its NRI (Non-Resident Indian) population. After serving in the Gujarat police for almost three decades, Dilip, along with his wife, moved to the US with his son five years ago. However, Dilipkumar used to visit India often, as his daughter, Rinku, a single mother to Om, used to live in Anand.

Yash is survived by his wife, Nikki Brahmbhatt, and their four-year-old son.
