Ramesh Bidhuri hurls communal slurs to BSP MP Ali, Opposition reacts

The new parliament’s beginnings maligned as communal abuses echoed throughout the house during the special session

BJP MP abused BSP MP in the house

Updated: Sep 22nd, 2023

In the ‘historic’ special session of the new parliament, a BJP MP stained the beginnings in the late evening in Lok Sabha on Sept 21.

A video showed BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri during the on-going special session at the new parliament.

While speaking during a discussion on the success of Chandrayaan-3 and the achievements of India's space programme, BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri repeatedly hurled communal slurs and abuse at a fellow MP, Danish Ali of the BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party).

Opposition disappointed

After the opposition parties created ruckus over the incident, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla expunged Bidhuri’s objectionable remarks from the proceedings of the House, but as the ruckus continued from the opposition parties, BJP deputy leader and defence minister Rajnath Singh expressed regret over the words of Bidhuri, saying that he has not heard the controversial remarks of Bidhuri but if he has used some words that have hurt the sentiments of the BSP MP, then he expresses regret over it and these words should be removed from the proceedings of the House.

Sources said that on the instructions of party president JP Nadda, it has issued a show cause notice to Bidhuri seeking his reply on the incident.

A day after the controversial incident, BSP MP Ali wrote a letter today to speaker Om Birla to refer his case to the privilege committee and also urged him to order an inquiry into the matter.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal also arrived at MP Ali’s  home today to show solidarity.

“Heartbreaking,” says Ali

In his letter, Ali said that he has written with deep anguish regarding the speech given in Lok Sabha by an MP of the BJP, Bidhuri, during the discussion on Chandrayan-3 success.

“During the course of his speech, he directed the most foul, abusive invectives against me, which are part of the record of the Lok Sabha. This is most unfortunate, and the fact that it has happened in a new parliament building under your leadership as speaker is truly heartbreaking for me as a minority member of this great nation and an elected member of parliament as well.”

‘Insult to all Indians’, says Jairam

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed Bidhuri for his derogatory remarks on Ali saying that his remarks are an insult to all Indians.

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters, Ramesh, who is also party’s general secretary communication incharge said, “This is simply not acceptable, it’s a half-hearted apology, an afterthought”.

“What Bidhuri has said is an insult to the parliament and it makes a mockery of what the prime minister keeps on repeating ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas’ which all becomes ‘bakwaas’ (rubbish),” he said.

The Congress leader said that strictest action should be taken against the MP.

“If this is not the fit case for suspension then how are AAP Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha suspended for exercising their right in the Parliament.

Ramesh took to social media today and condemned two other ministers (seen behind Bidhuri) for shamelessly laughing when Bidhuri hurled abuses. “Two former union cabinet ministers, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Dr Harsh Vardhan, were shamelessly gleeful at the hate speech made by their party colleague Ramesh Bidhuri yesterday in the Lok Sabha,” wrote Ramesh on X.

Harsh Vardhan clarifies stand

After seeing his name trending on social media platform X, union minister and BJP MP Harsh Vardhan clarified his stance on the matter today writing a detailed statement on social media today.
