Despite a statewide ban on alcohol consumption, a notable exemption was made for the employees, officials, and corporate guests officially operating at the SEZ situated in the GIFT City on Dec 12, 2023l.

This move sparked chatter across the state, the spoils of which have now reached the Gujarat High Court as well.

In a public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the HC challenging the upliftment of this ban, the government, the narcotics and excise department, and representatives from the home affairs department are named as defendants.

The applicant has also written to the state’s narcotics and excise department, the chief minister, the governor, and the director general of police (DGP) to declare this move invalid.

This move by the government is serving the well-off and rich individuals. Over a mere investment of ₹500 cr and club memberships worth ₹108 cr, the government has taken this unlawful step, which cannot be justified or deemed valid by any means and should be declared void, sought the plea.

In Gandhi’s Gujarat, the liquor ban creates awareness over the pitfall of alcohol and the consequences it brings, including accidents leading to deaths over drinking and driving, the petition added.

Along with several instances of liquor busts, the lives of innumerable victims and their families have been affected by consuming toxic liquor.

Amidst such implications, this decision should be deemed null and void and be withdrawn over legal proceedings by the HC, the plea sought.

This plea will soon be heard before an HC judge.
