Updated: Feb 18th, 2024

Gujarat’s coastlines are prone to smuggling of cigarettes, gold, and narcotics, which often show up at Kutch’s Mundra port.

The accused of crores of drug smuggling, Jobanjit Singh Sandhu, escaped the clutches of Bhuj police. In 2021, drugs (heroine) worth ₹21,000 cr were seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

Sandhu was taken from Palara jail in Bhuj to Amritsar on Feb 14 to appear in the Amritsar Sessions Court. On the way back from Amritsar, the accused was taken for lunch.

Evading the eyes of three police personnel at the Bhuj police headquarters, Sandhu managed to escape the police.

Prisoner party in-charge police sub-inspector RC Solanki informed Kutch police about the escape. Even after 24 hours, the kingpin has not been nabbed.

Sandhu was embroiled in the drug case of ₹21,000 cr in Gandhidham, Kutch, in 2021.

Moreover, a case was registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) against him in Amritsar, for which he was taken to Amritsar. Various cases have been  registered against Sandhu in places including Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat.

An action will be taken against the in-charge PSI, and a report will be furnished before the superintendent of police (SP).

After Sandhu escaped the cops near Amritsar, a search was initiated with the help of local police, but the accused absconded.
