Ayushman cardholders struggle as servers slow down in Gujarat

Every day, around 160 Ayushman cardholders are admitted to the hospital

Updated: Oct 31st, 2023

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) or Ayushman Card facility often drags controversy into Gujarat. This time, PMJAY server setbacks in government hospitals irked the patients.

At the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, on the premises of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, the Ayushman cardholders awaited their discharge even after being treated due to a lapse in the servers of PMJAY.

Cardholders’ conundrum

Kin of patients at the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre have complained that the patients had to stay back at the hospital even after 3-4 days of being treated as they couldn’t claim the benefit due to the sluggish servers. At times, the cardholders were also asked to pay the whole bill.

On the other hand, the hospital claimed that only a few cases have faced such challenges. In some cases, the delay in discharge was a result of a lack of proper documentation.

As per the hospital every day, around 160 Ayushman cardholders are admitted to the hospital, while 130 patients are discharged. The hospital also said that the delay in discharge couldn’t be due to servers.

Notably, such challenges were faced by Ayushman cardholders at a private hospital in Ahmedabad as well.

Recently, the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report stated, 49 private hospitals in Gujarat with a capacity of 50 beds were admitting 150 patients under the PMJAY scheme.

Last month, the health department levied a fine of ₹8.06 lakh to 26 hospitals in Ahmedabad in two years after 55 complaints were registered against them for heavily charging patients.
