Updated: Jan 2nd, 2024

In a decade-long case of financial fraud, the Anand police have been accused of not mentioning the amount of seized money and gold in a charge sheet.

The case in point has come to the forefront with a writ petition filed by Rohini Patel and Lata Makwana which alleges that Anand police seized a total of 100 tola (1.16 kg) of gold and cash from Meena, Suresh, and Dhaval Patel, the three are accused in a case.

According to the writ, the police seized money and gold from the accused, but never mentioned it in the chargesheet.

The Gujarat HC took cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to the DGP (director general of police) of Anand.

Was it a lapse or an intent?

The Gujarat HC issued notice to police inspector (PI) JV Rathod, PI MI Prajapati, local crime branch PI KG Chaudhary, and police constable SV Rathod and have scheduled the hearing for February.

Patel and Makwana’s 2014 complaint involved Meena Patel, Suresh Patel, and Dhaval Patel of running a fraudulent investment scheme.

Patel and Makwana lost ₹40 lakh and ₹12 lakh, respectively to the accused.

During the investigation, the police allegedly seized cash and gold from the accused in Mumbai. However, these recoveries were not included in the charge sheet, according to the writ petition.

Earlier, when the petitioners came to know about the lapse, they informed Anand DGP about the same, which led to an investigation by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) on Dec 12, 2014.

However, as per petitioners, LCB allegedly tried to save Anand police in the report issued on July 2, 2021.

On Aug 4, 2023, Anand police DCP presented a report stating that no proof was found as per the complaint of petitioner.  The petitioners then approached the high court.
