The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited announced 100% land acquisition in Gujarat for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project

The private land acquisition of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train has completed 100% land acquisition in various districts of Gujarat worth ₹10,000 cr , announced the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) on Oct 10. 

According to reports, a cost of ₹8,215 cr was estimated for Gujarat private land acquisition, whereas ₹2,284 cr for Maharashtra. However, land acquisitions of a sum amount of ₹10,000 cr was done in both states.

In Gujarat, private landowners earned ₹6-₹6.50 cr per hectare in the acquisition deal.

District-wise land acquisition

The corporation has acquired a total of 6,248 plots of land in districts including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Valsad, Navsari, Bharuch, Kheda, and Anand.

NHSRCL has acquired most of the land in Surat, with 160.51 hectares, 140.3 hectares in Vadodara, 140 hectares in Bharuch, and 133.29 hectares of Ahmedabad's land.

Overall, the project required the acquisition of 951.14 hectares of land across eight districts in Gujarat, out of a total project land requirement of 1389.49 hectares.

With this latest acquisition in Gujarat’s Surat, specifically in Kathore village, the NHSRCL has acquired almost 100% of the required land for the project.

UTs included

The 508 km-long project between the two intercities of different states, the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu, is also included.

In neighbouring Maharashtra, out of the 429.71 hectares required for the project, 99.83% of the land acquisition process has been completed, with 7.90 hectares acquired in the Union Territories.

Background

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi and his then Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in Ahmedabad on Sept 14, 2017. The Japanese government lent a loan of ₹88,000 cr for this project.

With a delay of three to four years, the project is running way behind schedule. Reports suggest that the first phase might start in 2026.

The NHSRCL was established on Feb 12, 2016, operating as a Special Purpose Vehicle with the partnership of the central government through the ministry of railways and the governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project has acquired a total of 6,336 land parcels.
