In snowy regions, tourists love the fun of sliding on ice. Ice skating has become a popular sport, and competitions are also held. For these events, a special type of ice floor is made. A square or rectangular ice ground is called an "ice rink ".

An ice rink is made by pouring water on a cement or concrete floor. In cold regions, it naturally freezes into ice. In some places, even plastic artificial rinks are made.

The idea of making a man-made ice rink was discovered by scientist - Frank Joseph Zamboni. He was born on January 16, 1901, in Eureka, Utah, USA. After studying at a local technical college, he and his brother set up an ice factory.

In 1940, he created a special ice floor that would not melt at normal temperature. He fixed cold water pipes under the floor to keep the ice frozen. The rink he built in 1940 is still running today!

Because of his invention, skating became possible even in summer and in places without natural snow. This was a big contribution to the sports world, and Zamboni became world famous. He also invented a machine to smooth the surface of ice. It used a Jeep car engine. This “resurfacing machine” also became very useful. Thanks to Zamboni’s inventions, not only skating but also games like ice hockey became possible.

Zamboni passed away in 1988.
