- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!

- 'જો હું 1000 રૂપિયા ચૂકવું તો પૈસા ગુમાવીશ. હું ૧૨૫ કોરડા સહન કરી શકું તેમ નથી. તેના કરતાં બે ગ્લાસ ઘી પીવું વધુ સારું રહેશે. એ રીતે હું મારા પૈસા બચાવી શકીશ અને શારીરિક પીડા પણ ટાળી શકીશ.'
એક સમયની વાત છે, એક નાનું ગામ હતું. તે ગામમાં એક વેપારી રહેતો હતો જે શુદ્ધ ઘી વેચતો હતો. તેની દુકાન ખૂબ જાણીતી હતી. ઘણા ગામવાસીઓ તેના પર વિશ્વાસ કરતા અને નિયમિતપણે તેની પાસેથી ઘી ખરીદતા.
આ વેપારી જોકે અત્યંત લોભી હતો. વધારે પૈસા કમાવવા માટે, તેણે છૂપી રીતે શુદ્ધ ઘીમાં સસ્તું તેલ ભેળવવાનું શરૂ કર્યું અને તેને ઊંચી કિંમતે વેચવા લાગ્યો. આ રીતે તે નિર્દોષ ગ્રાહકોને છેતરીને મોટો નફો કરતો હતો.
ટૂંક સમયમાં ભેળસેળવાળું ઘી ખાઈને લોકો બીમાર પડવા લાગ્યા. ગામલોકોને સમજાયું કે વેપારી અપ્રામાણિક હતો. તેમણે રાજાને તેની ફરિયાદ કરી.
રાજાએ તરત જ વેપારીને તેના દરબારમાં બોલાવ્યો.
તેની સામે કડક નજરે જોઈને રાજાએ કહ્યું, 'તેં શુદ્ધ ઘીમાં સસ્તું તેલ ભેળવીને અને નફા માટે તેને વેચીને લોકોને છેતર્યા છે. શું તને ભાન છે કે તારા ભેળસેળવાળા ઘીથી કેટલું નુકસાન થયું છે? તારા લોભને કારણે ઘણા લોકોએ દુખ ભોગવ્યું છે.'
રાજાએ આગળ કહ્યું, 'તારો ગુનો ગંભીર છે. જે કોઈ લોકોના સ્વાસ્થ્ય સાથે રમે છે તે સખત સજાને પાત્ર છે. હું તને ત્રણ વિકલ્પો આપું છું. તને જે સજા ગમે તે તું પસંદ કરી શકે છે.'
સજાઓ આ મુજબ હતી-
તારે ૧૦૦૦ રૂપિયાનો દંડ ભરવો પડશે.
તારે શિકારીના ૧૨૫ કોરડા ખાવા પડશે.
તારે તારી પોતાની જ દુકાનનું બે આખા ગ્લાસ ઘી પીવું પડશે.
વેપારી ધ્યાનથી વિચારવા લાગ્યો.
'જો હું ૧૦૦૦ રૂપિયા ચૂકવું તો હું મારા પૈસા ગુમાવીશ. હું ચોક્કસપણે ૧૨૫ કોરડા સહન કરી શકું તેમ નથી. તેના કરતાં બે ગ્લાસ ઘી પીવું વધુ સારું રહેશે. એ રીતે હું મારા પૈસા બચાવી શકીશ અને શારીરિક પીડા પણ ટાળી શકીશ.'
પોતાના ચતુરાઈભર્યા નિર્ણયથી ખુશ થઈને વેપારીએ આત્મવિશ્વાસ સાથે કહ્યું, 'મહારાજ, હું મારી દુકાનનું બે ગ્લાસ ઘી પીવાનું પસંદ કરીશ.'
વેપારીએ ખુદ બીજાને વેચેલા ભેળસેળવાળા ઘીનો ક્યારેય સ્વાદ ચાખ્યો ન હતો, તેથી તેને ખબર નહોતી કે તે કેટલું ભયાનક હતું.
તરત જ તેની સામે બે ગ્લાસ ઘી લાવવામાં આવ્યા.
જેવો તેણે પહેલો ઘૂંટડો લીધો, તેને સૂગ ચઢી. તેનો સ્વાદ અસહ્ય હતો. પેલું ગંદુ મિશ્રણ માંડ તેના ગળા નીચે ઉતરતું હતું. ગમે તેમ કરીને, આંખો બંધ કરીને અને પોતાની જાતને દબાણ કરીને, તે માંડ અડધો ગ્લાસ પી શક્યો... પણ પછી તે આગળ વધી ન શક્યો.
વધારે સહન ન થતાં વેપારીએ બૂમ પાડી, 'મહારાજ! હું આ નહીં પી શકું. આના બદલે હું શિકારીના કોરડા સ્વીકારીશ!'
તરત જ જલ્લાદે તેને કોરડા મારવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. લગભગ પચીસ કોરડા પછી વેપારી પીડાથી ચીસો પાડવા લાગ્યો. તેની ચામડી ફાટી ગઈ અને લોહી વહેવા લાગ્યું. આ પીડા અસહ્ય હતી.
ફરી એકવાર, તેણે હિંમત ગુમાવી દીધી.
મોટેથી રડતા રડતા તેણે વિનંતી કરી, 'મહારાજ! મહેરબાની કરીને થોભો! હું ૧૦૦૦ રૂપિયાનો દંડ ભરવા તૈયાર છું.'
સજા અટકાવવામાં આવી. વેપારીએ તરત જ દંડ ચૂકવી દીધો.
આમ, પોતાના લોભ અને મૂર્ખામીને કારણે વેપારીએ ભેળસેળવાળું ઘી પણ પીવું પડયું, પીડાદાયક કોરડા પણ સહન કરવા પડયા અને સાથે પૈસા પણ ગુમાવ્યા.
તે કડવો પાઠ શીખ્યો.
બોધઃ લોભ હંમેશા નુકસાન તરફ દોરી જાય છે. માણસે ક્યારેય લોભી ન બનવું જોઈએ.
The Greedy Merchant
O nce upon a time, there was a small village. In that village lived a merchant who sold pure ghee. His shop was well known, and many villagers trusted him and bought ghee regularly from him.
However, the merchant was extremely greedy. To earn more money, he secretly began mixing cheap oil with the pure ghee and selling it at a high price. In this way, he cheated innocent customers while making large profits.
Soon, people started falling ill after consuming the adulterated ghee. The villagers realized that the merchant was dishonest and complained about him to the king.
The king immediately summoned the merchant to his court.
Looking at him sternly, the king said,
"You have been cheating people by mixing cheap oil in pure ghee and selling it for profit. Do you realize how much harm your adulterated ghee has caused? Many people have suffered because of your greed."
The king continued, "Your crime is serious. Anyone who plays with the health of the people deserves strict punishment. I will give you three choices. You may choose whichever punishment you prefer."
The punishments were:
1. You must pay a fine of 1000 rupees.
2. You must receive 125 lashes from the hunter.
3. You must drink two full glasses of ghee from your own shop.
The merchant began to think carefully.
"If I pay 1000 rupees," he thought, "I will lose my money. I certainly cannot bear the pain of 125 lashes. It would be better to drink two glasses of ghee. That way, I can save my money and avoid physical pain."
Feeling pleased with his clever decision, the merchant said confidently,
"Your Majesty, I choose to drink two glasses of ghee from my shop."
The merchant had never actually tasted the adulterated ghee he sold to others, so he had no idea how terrible it was.
Two glasses of ghee were immediately brought before him.
As soon as he took the first sip, he felt disgusted. The taste was unbearable. The foul mixture would hardly go down his throat. Somehow, closing his eyes and forcing himself, he managed to drink barely half a glass - but he could not continue.
Unable to bear it any longer, the merchant cried out,
"Your Majesty! I cannot drink this. I will accept the hunter's lashes instead!"
At once, the executioner began whipping him. After about twenty-five lashes, the merchant screamed in pain. His skin tore, and blood began to flow. The suffering was unbearable.
Once again, he lost courage.
Crying loudly, he pleaded,
"Your Majesty! Please stop! I am ready to pay the fine of 1000 rupees."
The punishment was stopped, and the merchant immediately paid the fine.
Thus, because of his greed and foolishness, the merchant ended up drinking the adulterated ghee, suffering painful lashes, and losing his money as well. He learned his lesson the hard way.
Moral: Greed always leads to loss. One should never be greedy.
