સુરીલી કોયલ અને કપટી શિયાળ

- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!

'મારું ગીત ઈશ્વર તરફથી મળેલી ભેટ છે, એને વેચી ના શકાય. હું તો મારાં ભાઈ-બહેનોના આનંદ માટે ગાઉં છુંત કોઈ લોભ-લાલચ માટે નહીં.'

જં ગલની ઘાટીમાં બધાં પક્ષીઓ અને પ્રાણીઓ શાંતિથી રહેતાં હતાં. એ ઘાટીમાં એક ખાસ મૂલ્યવાન પક્ષી હતું- એ તો એક નાનકડી, પીળા રંગની કોયલ હતી, જેને બીજાં પશુ-પંખીઓ 'સુરીલી' તરીકે ઓળખતાં હતાં. સુરીલી દરેક સવારે મીઠાં-મધુરાં ગીતોથી દિવસની શરૂઆત કરતી હતી. તેનો અવાજ એટલો બધો મોહક હતો કે વૃક્ષો પરનાં પાંદડાં લહેરાતાં હતાં અને નદીઓ પણ પોતાનો પ્રવાહ ધીમો કરી દેતી.

જંગલના બીજા છેડે એક શિયાળ રહેતું હતુંત તે કપટ અને લુચ્ચાઈથી ભરેલું હતું. તે આજુબાજુનાં પશુ-પંખીઓને પોતાની જાળમાં ફસાવવા પ્રયત્ન કરતું રહેતું. લુચ્ચું શિયાળ પોતે પણ ગાવાની કોશિશ કરતું હતું, પણ બધાં એનું વિચિત્ર ગીત અને આલાપ સાંભળીને હસતાં હતાં. પરિણામે, કપટી શિયાળના મનમાં અદેખાઈ ઊભી થઈ. તેણે વિચાર્યું, 'હું એ સુરીલી કોયલને એવી રીતે ફસાવીશ કે એ મારે માટે ગાશે અને ત્યાર પછી એને જાળમાં ફસાવવાનું કંઈક કરીશ.'

એક દિવસે કપટી શિયાળે પાંદડાંમાંથી એક તીવ્ર વાસવાળી અને લોભામણી વાનગી તૈયાર કરી. તેણે સુરીલીને કહ્યું, 'સુરીલીબહેન! જો તું મારે માટે એક ખાસ ગીત ગાઈશ, તો હું તને આ સ્વાદિષ્ટ ભોજનની ડીશ આપીશ.' 

સુરીલીને પ્રથમ તબક્કે થોડી લાલચ તો થઈ ગઈ, પણ તેણે નક્કી કર્યું હતું કે તેનું ગીત તો કુદરતે આપેલી ભેટ છે - એને કોઈ ચીજવસ્તુના બદલામાં વેચી શકાય નહીં.

તેણે શાંતિથી જવાબ આપ્યો, 'મારું ગીત ઈશ્વર તરફથી મળેલી ભેટ છે, એને વેચી ના શકાય. હું તો મારાં ભાઈ-બહેનોના આનંદ માટે ગાઉં છુંત કોઈ લોભ-લાલચ માટે નહીં.'

એક દિવસ એ લાલચી શિયાળ ખૂબ બીમાર પડયું. બધાં પ્રાણીઓએ એના કપટી સ્વભાવને કારણે એને એકલો મૂકી દીધો, પરંતુ સુરીલી તેની વહારે ગઈ. તે તેની બાજુમાં બેઠી અને મધુર ગીત ગાવા લાગી. ગીત સાંભળીને લાલચી શિયાળની આંખોમાં પાણી આવી ગયું. એણે રડતાં રડતાં કબૂલાત કરી, 'મને તો એવું લાગતું હતું કે તું સાવ નાજુક અને નબળું પંખી છેત પરંતુ ખરેખર તો તું સૌથી વધુ બળવાન અને પ્રેમ કરનારી છે!'

સુરીલીના આ વર્તન દ્વારા આપણે પણ જાણી લેવાની જરૂર છે કે મીઠો અને મધુર અવાજ એ શ નથી, પણ એક દવા છે. કોયલ એક નાનકડું પંખી હોવા છતાં ઉદાર હૃદય, ધીરજ અને પ્રેમ દર્શાવે છે, જે આપણને માનવતાનો ઉત્તમ નમૂનો પૂરો પાડે છે.

બોધ

પ્રેમ અને નમ્રતા એ સૌથી મોટી શક્તિ છે. નમ્ર ઉત્તર ક્રોધને શાંત કરી દે છે, પણ કઠોર શબ્દો રીસ ચઢાવે છે.

Surili the Cuckoo and the Cunning Fox

" At first, Surili felt a little tempted, but she reminded herself that her song was a gift from nature-it could not be sold for any material thing.

She calmly replied, "My song is a gift from God, it cannot be sold. I sing for the happiness of my brothers and sisters, not for any greed or reward."

A ll the birds and animals lived peacefully in a valley of the forest. In that valley, there was a very special and valuable bird-a small, yellow cuckoo whom everyone lovingly called 'Surili' (Melodious). Every morning, Surili started the day with her sweet and melodious songs. Her voice was so charming that the leaves on the trees would sway joyfully, and even the rivers would slow down their flow to listen.

At the other end of the forest lived a fox who was full of trickery and cunningness. He always tried to trap the nearby animals and birds. The clever fox also tried to sing, but everyone laughed when they heard his strange songs and tunes. Because of this, the cunning fox became very jealous. He thought, "I will trap Surili the cuckoo in such a way that she will have to sing for me, and then I will do something to capture her."

One day, the cunning fox prepared a strong-smelling and tempting dish using leaves. He said to Surili, "Surili sister! If you sing a special song for me, I will give you this delicious plate of food." At first, Surili felt a little tempted, but she reminded herself that her song was a gift from nature-it could not be sold for any material thing.

She calmly replied, "My song is a gift from God, it cannot be sold. I sing for the happiness of my brothers and sisters, not for any greed or reward."

One day, the greedy fox fell very sick. Because of his wicked nature, all the other animals left him alone. However, Surili came to help him. She sat by his side and began to sing a sweet song. Hearing her song, tears came to the greedy fox's eyes. He confessed while crying, "I used to think that you were just a completely delicate and weak bird, but truly, you are the strongest and most loving of all!"

Through Surili's behavior, we also need to learn that a sweet and gentle voice is not a weapon, but a healing medicine. Even though the cuckoo is a tiny bird, she shows a big heart, patience, and love, setting a wonderful example of humanity for all of us.

Moral

Love and kindness are the greatest strengths.  A gentle answer calms anger, but harsh words make people angry.
