We are all familiar with LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens. You might be surprised to learn that the LCD was discovered by accident while trying to create a screen for diagnosing cancer. Today, it is used everywhere.
This discovery was made by a scientist named James Fergason. He made about 150 inventions in his lifetime.
James Fergason was born on January 12, 1934, in the village of Bakenda, Missouri, USA. He earned a degree in physics from the University of Missouri and served in the army for a short time. After that, he joined the Westinghouse Laboratory to do research.
In 1966, he joined the Liquid Crystal Institute and made a key discovery (seminal crystal). In 1968, he started his own factory to make liquid crystals. He was the first to bring watches with LCD screens to the market. Fergason received many honors for his 150 inventions. He passed away on December 9, 2008.
