- 'પિતાજી પિતાજી! આ ઘૂમટ તો જુઓ! એકદમ પાસે જ આવી પહોંચ્યો છે.' લીપશે એકદમ ચમક્યો, કેમકે દેવળનો ઘૂમટ હતો દૂર. તે વળી એકદમ નજીક ક્યાંથી આવી પહોંચ્યો!
વાત છે સતરમી સદીની. યુરોપ ખંડમાં હોલેન્ડ નામનો દેશ છે. તેની પાસેજ એક નાનો ટાપુ છે. એ ટાપુનું નામ બાલચર્ન ટાપુ.
એ ટાપુ પર મીડસવર્ગ નામનું ગામ. ત્યાં એક ચશ્મા તૈયાર કરનારો માનવી રહે. જૂના જમાનાની રીત મુજબ તે ગામલોકોના ચશ્માં ઠીકઠાક કર્યા કરે. ચશ્માંવાળાનું નામ લીપશે.
એક વાર એ ગરીબ લીપશે પોતાના ચશ્મામાં ખોવાયેલો હતો. ત્યારે જ તેની નાની પુત્રીએ બૂમ પાડી ઃ 'પિતાજી પિતાજી! આ ઘૂમટ તો જુઓ! એકદમ પાસે જ આવી પહોંચ્યો છે.'
લીપશે એકદમ ચમક્યો, કેમકે દેવળનો ઘૂમટ હતો દૂર. તે વળી એકદમ નજીક ક્યાંથી આવી પહોંચ્યો!
તેણે છોકરી તરફ ધ્યાન આપ્યું. બાજુમાં જ જાતજાતના કાચ લઈ રમતી એ છોકરી, એક કાચ લઈ તેની આરપાર જોતી હતી.
પિતાએ જોયું તો એ કાચ સામાન્ય કાચ ન હતો. એક કાચ એક બાજુથી સપાટ અને બીજી બાજુથી અંતર્ગોળ હતો. જ્યારે બીજો કાચ એક બાજુથી સપાટ અને બીજી બાજુથી બહિર્ગોળ હતો. એ બન્ને કાચ એવી રીતે ગોઠવાઈ જતા હતા કે દૂરનો ઘૂમટ પાસે દેખાતો હતો.
પિતા તો એ દ્રશ્યથી એવા ખુશ થઇ ગયા કે પછી બધા જ કાચ ગોઠવી ગોઠવીને તેમણે ઘુમટ જોવા માંડયો.
લાંબે ગાળે ખૂબ સંશોધન બાદ તેણે એ ઉપરથી પોતાની રીતનાં ત્રણ દૂરબીન બનાવ્યાં.
એ દૂરબીન તેણે પોતાના રાજા પાસે મોકલી આપ્યાં.
એ દૂરબીને એટલી ખ્યાતિ પ્રાપ્ત કરી કે ઇટાલીમાં ગેલિલિયો નામના વૈજ્ઞાાનિકે એ વિષે સાંભળ્યું. તે જાતે એ કૌતુક જોવા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યો.
અને પેલી છોકરીએ સહુ પ્રથમ જોયા બાદ, બરાબર એક વર્ષે ગેલિલિયોએ પોતાની રીતનું દૂરબીન ૧૯૦૯માં બનાવ્યું.
The Church Dome
"Father! Father! Look at that dome! It has suddenly come right up close!" Lippershey was startled, as the church dome was far away. How could it have suddenly appeared nearby?
T he story takes place in the seventeenth century. There is a country in the continent of Europe called Holland. Right next to it is a small island. The name of that island is Walcheren Island.
On that island is a village named Middelburg. A man who prepared spectacles lived there. Following the customs of the old days, he would fix and adjust the villagers' eyeglasses. The spectacle-maker's name was Lippershey.
Once, this poor Lippershey was absorbed in his work on his spectacles. Just then, his young daughter shouted: "Father! Father! Look at that dome! It has suddenly come right up close!"
Lippershey was startled, as the church dome was far away. How could it have suddenly appeared nearby?
He paid attention to the girl. The girl, who was playing with various types of glass pieces beside him, was holding one piece of glass and looking through it.
The father saw that the glass was not ordinary glass. One piece of glass was flat on one side and concave on the other. While the second piece of glass was flat on one side and convex on the other. These two pieces of glass were arranged in such a way that the distant dome appeared close.
The father was so delighted by this sight that he then began arranging all the glass pieces to view the dome repeatedly.
After a long period and much research, he used this observation to create three telescopes of his own design.
He sent these telescopes to his King.
These telescopes gained such fame that a scientist in Italy named Galileo heard about them. He personally traveled there to see this marvel.
And exactly one year after that girl first saw it, Galileo created his own version of the telescope in 1609.
