ધ્રુવની બીજી પરીક્ષા

'તે આવતાંની સાથે પહેલાં અપરમાતાને વંદન કરશે અને એ રીતે તપ દ્વારા તેણે સગા-સાવકાના ભેદ મિટાવી દીધા હશે ! તો જ હું માનીશ કે એ સાચો તપસ્વી બન્યો છે.'

'હવે ધુ્રવ સંસારની પરીક્ષામાં પાસ થાય ખરો ! અવરને અને અપરને જે પંડના બનાવે એ જ સાચા તપસ્વી. જેનામાં વહાલ ન હોય તેનામાં વહાલ પ્રગટાવે એ તપ સાચું.'

ધ્રુ વની હવે જ ખરી પરીક્ષા હતી. તે પિતાના ખોળામાં બેસવા ગયો હતો. અપરમાતાએ તેને વેણ કહ્યું: 'પિતાના વહાલા થવું હતું, તો માનીતી રાણીને પેટે જન્મ લેવો હતો ને ?'

ધુ્રવ તો તપ કરવા ચાલ્યો ગયો, પણ સગી માતા સુનીતિએ તેને કહ્યું: 'કોઈ ઉપર રોષને ખાતર કે વેર ભાવે તપ કરવા જઈશ તો એ તપ કદિ ફળવાનું નથી.'

ધુ્રવ નાનો હતો, પણ જ્ઞાાની હતો. તેણે પવિત્ર ભાવે ભગવાનને યાદ કર્યા. નાના બાળકનું તપ એટલું મોટું હતું કે ભગવાન પ્રસન્ન થઈને જ રહ્યા.

નારદજીને આ વાતની ખબર પડયા વિના રહે કે ? નારદજી માતા સુનીતિ પાસે પહોંચ્યા. જઈને કહે: 'ધુ્રવને ભગવાન મળ્યા છે. એ સાચો તપસ્વી બન્યો છે.'

માતા કહે: 'એ કેટલો મોટો તપસ્વી બન્યો છે તેની પરીક્ષા હમણાં થઈ જશે.'

નારદજીએ પૂછ્યું, 'કેવી રીતે ?'

માતા સુનીતિ કહે: 'તે આવતાંની સાથે પહેલાં અપરમાતાને વંદન કરશે અને એ રીતે તપ દ્વારા તેણે સગા-સાવકાના ભેદ મિટાવી દીધા હશે ! તો જ હું માનીશ કે એ સાચો તપસ્વી બન્યો છે.'

ધુ્રવ આવ્યો. પહેલો ગયો અપરમાતા સુરુચિને વંદન કરવા. જો કે તેને મન હવે પર કે અપર કોઈ જ ન હતું.

અપરમાતા સુરુચિને જ્યારે તેણે પ્રણામ કર્યા, ત્યારે એ માતા પણ એટલી ગદ્ગદિત થઈ ગઈ કે તેણે વહાલથી તેને અપનાવી લીધો. એ અપરમાતા પણ બોલી ઊઠી: 'આવ ધુ્રવ ! તું તો મને મારા સાચા દીકરા કરતાંય વધુ વહાલો લાગે છે.'

ધુ્રવને એટલા વહાલા લાગવું નહોતું. એને તો વહાલની વહેંચણીમાં સ્પર્ધા જોઈતી નહોતી, પણ અપરમાને સગીમા બનાવવી હતી.

સુરુચિને એ રીતે તેણે સગી મા બનાવી દીધી.

છોરું કછોરું થાય પણ માવતર કમાવતર ન થાય, એ કહેવત તેણે જૂઠી પાડી, બલકે કમાવતર બનવા જતી વડીલ માને પણ તેણે સગી માતા બનાવી. પિતાને તો આવો જ પુત્ર ગમે ને ?

જ્યારે ધુ્રવની જન્મદાતા માતા સુનીતિએ આ દ્રશ્ય જોયું ત્યારે તે નારદજીને કહે: 'હવે ધુ્રવ સંસારની પરીક્ષામાં પાસ થાય ખરો ! અવરને અને અપરને જે પંડના બનાવે એ જ સાચા તપસ્વી. જેનામાં વહાલ ન હોય તેનામાં વહાલ પ્રગટાવે એ તપ સાચું.'

સગી માતાએ ધુ્રવને બેહદ પ્રેમથી અપનાવ્યો અને કહ્યું, 'આજે તું ખરો સપૂત બન્યો, બેટા ! જે સાવકાને સગા બનાવે એ જ સંત.'

Dhruv's Real Test

He proved the old saying wrong: 'A child can be bad, but a parent can never be bad.' In fact, he turned a parent who was becoming unkind into a true mother. Wouldn't any father love a son like that?

N ow, Dhruv faced his real test. He had gone to sit on his father's lap. His stepmother spoke harsh words to him: "If you wanted to be dear to your father, shouldn't you have been born to his favorite queen?"

Dhruv went away to perform penance, but his own mother, Suniti, told him: "If you perform penance out of anger or for revenge, it will never be successful."

Dhruv was young, but he was wise. He prayed to God with a pure heart. The penance of such a small child was so great that God was very pleased.

How could the sage Naradji not know of this? He went to mother Suniti and said, "Dhruv has met God. He has become a true ascetic."

The mother replied, "We will now see how great of an ascetic he has truly become."

Naradji asked, "How?"

Mother Suniti said: "When he returns, if he first bows to his stepmother, it will prove that his penance has removed the difference between 'his own' and 'other'. Only then will I believe he is a true ascetic."

Dhruv returned. The first thing he did was go to his stepmother, Suruchi, to bow and pay his respects. In his mind, there was no longer any 'other' or 'step-family'.

When he bowed to his stepmother Suruchi, she was so deeply moved that she embraced him lovingly. The stepmother exclaimed, "Come, Dhruv! You are dearer to me than my own son."

Dhruv had not wanted to be the most loved. He did not want a competition for affection; he simply wanted to make his stepmother his real mother.

And in this way, he turned Suruchi into his real mother.

When Dhruv's birth mother, Suniti, saw this, she said to Naradji: "Now, Dhruv will truly pass the test of the world. A true ascetic is one who makes others their own. True penance is that which creates love where there is none."

His own mother embraced Dhruv with immense love and said, "Today you have become a truly worthy son, my child! A true saint is one who can turn a step-relation into a real one."
