મા પાસે પૈસા ન હતા, પ્રેમ ભરપૂર હતો

- ફ્રાન્સમાં તેલ હતું જ નહિ અને મા કહેતી હતી : ના, અંધારૃં નહિં થવા દઉં

હું નાનો બાળક માંદગીમાં તરફડતો હતો. અંધારી શેરીનો એક અંધારો ઓરડો અમારૂ જીવન હતું. એ ઓરડાનો ઓટલો ન હોત તો જીવવું મુશ્કેલ થઈ પડે.

માંદગીમાંય હું ઓટલા ઉપર જ પડયો હતો મા પાસે પૈસા કયાંથી કે મારો ઉપચાર કરે ? પણ તેની પાસે જ્ઞાાન હતું. અભિનય-પ્રતિભા હતી.

ઓટલા પરના એ તખ્તા ઉપર જ તે અભિનય દ્વારા પ્રભુ ઇસુની વાતો કરવા લાગી. માં વાચતી. અભિનય કરતી.

હું માની વાતોમાં ઓતપ્રોત થઈ ગયો હતા. એકવાર ફાનસમાં તેલ ખૂટયું. મા કહે : 'ના અંધારૃં નહિ થવા દઉં.'

તેણે તેલ પૂર્યું. કયાંથી આવ્યું : તેની ખબર નથી, પ્રકાશ ફેલાયો. વાત આગળ ચાલી.

ઇસુને વધસ્તંભ ઉપર લઈ જવાના હતા, ત્યાંની વાત હતી. મા કહેવા લાગી.

ઇસુ ઉપર જાતજાતના આરોપ મૂકવામાં આવ્યા. પછી લોકોને રસ્તે દોરવાનો આક્ષેપ કરવામાં આવ્યો. પછી સજા ફટકારવામાં આવી. પછી તેમના વસ્ત્રો ફાડી નાખવામાં આવ્યા. પછી તેમને જે સ્તંભ ઉપર ફાંસી આપવાની હતી એ ક્રોસ સ્તંભ તેમની પાસે ઊંચકાવવામાં આવ્યો. પછી તેમની પર કાંટાનો મુગટ પહેરાવી હાંસી ભર્યા સ્વરમાં નારો લગાવવામાં આવ્યો, યહૂદીઓના રાજાની જ્યાં હાંસી થતી ત્યાં હાસ્યથી વાતવરણ ગૂંજી રહ્યું. ઇસુ ઉપર ફટકાઓ પડતા હતા. અને એ વધયાત્રા આગળ વધતી હતી.

મા એવા જોશીલા અભિનયમાં આવી ગઈ હતી કે તેને ભાન રહ્યું નહિ. મને પણ ભાન રહ્યું નહિ.

હું જોરથી ઉભો થઈને બોલી ઉઠયો : 'મા ! મા ! હું ઇસુને બચાવીશ. હું ઇસુને વધસ્તંભ પરથી પાછા લાવીશ. હું ઇસુ પાસે જઈશ.'

મા ભાનમાં આવી ગદ્ગદિત થઈને મને વળગી પડી કહેવા લાગી : 'તું અહીં જ રહેશે બેટા ! તું અહીં જ રહેશે. અને ઇસુની બધી ઇચ્છાઓ પૂરી કરશે. ઇસુને અવસાન પામ્યાને વર્ષો થયા બેટા ! પણ તે આપણને એક વાત શીખવાડી ગયા છે- કર્તવ્ય કરો. આપણે આપણું કર્તવ્ય પાર પાડવાનું છે. જ્યાં કર્તવ્ય પૂરૃં થાય છે ત્યાં જ ઇસુ હાજર હોય છે. તેઓ તો હવે બધે ફેલાઈ ગયા છે. સર્વત્ર છે.'

માના પ્રેમ દયા અને ઉપકારોના વર્ણન હું કરી શકું તેમ નથી. અભિનયનો વારસો મને મા તરફથી મળ્યો. આજે પણ હું મારા અભિનય દ્વારા ઇસુને શોધું છું. હજી કદાચ લક્ષ પૂરૃં નહિ થયું હોય ! એ પૂરૃં થશે એટલે જરૂર મને ઇસુની મુલાકાત થશે.

દુનિયાભારના હાસ્ય અભિનેતા તરીકે ચાર્લી ચેપલીનનું નામ જાણીતું છે.

Mother had no money, but she had plenty of love

In France, there was no oil at all, and Mother used to say-"No, I will not let it become dark."

I was a small child, struggling with illness. A dark room in a dark street was our life. If it weren't for the veranda of that room, living would have been difficult.

Even in my illness, I lay on that veranda. Where would Mother get the money to afford my treatment? But she possessed knowledge. She had a talent for acting.

On that very "stage" of the veranda, she began to tell the stories of Lord Jesus through her acting. Mother would read; she would perform.

I became completely absorbed in Mother's stories. Once, the oil in the lantern ran out. Mother said, "No, I will not let it become dark."

She refilled the oil. Where it came from, I do not know, but the light spread. The story continued.

It was the part where Jesus was to be taken to the cross. Mother began to speak.

Various accusations were placed upon Jesus. Then, he was accused of misleading the people. Then, the punishment was pronounced. Then, his clothes were torn. Then, he was made to carry the very cross on which he was to be hanged. Then, a crown of thorns was placed on him, and slogans were shouted in a mocking tone. Where the King of the Jews was being mocked, the atmosphere echoed with laughter. Lashes were falling upon Jesus, and the funeral procession moved forward.

Mother became so involved in her passionate performance that she lost all self-awareness. I also lost my awareness of reality.

I stood up forcefully and cried out, "Mother! Mother! I will save Jesus. I will bring Jesus back from the cross. I will go to Jesus."

Coming back to her senses, Mother was deeply moved; she hugged me and said, "You will stay right here, son! You will stay here and fulfill all of Jesus's wishes. It has been years since Jesus passed away, son! But he left us with one lesson-do your duty. We must fulfill our duty. Wherever duty is fulfilled, Jesus is present right there. He has now spread everywhere. He is everywhere."

I cannot describe Mother's love, mercy, and kindness. I received the heritage of acting from my mother. Even today, I seek Jesus through my acting. Perhaps the goal is not yet complete! Once it is finished, I will surely meet Jesus.
