- સિંહ એકદમ ગુસ્સે થઇ ગયો. ત્રાડ નાખીને બોલ્યો: 'ઓ પાજી, મારો શિકાર તું માગે છે ? મારો શિકાર પડાવી લેવા મને સલાહ આપે છે કે એક પાડાથી પેટ ભરાઈ જશે. પાજી, હું તારી લુચ્ચાઈ સમજી ગયો. મારા શિકારમાંથી ભાગ પડાવનાર તું કોણ?'

એ ક હતો સિંહ. વનમાં શિકાર કરવા નીકળ્યો. જતાં જતાં એક સસલું મળ્યું. સિંહે મારી તરાપ. મારી એક લાત. સસલાભાઈ મરી ગયા. સસલાને મારીને સિંહ
બેઠો.
એવામાં આડું હરણ નીકળ્યું.
સિંહે મારી તરાપ.
હરણને પછાડી દીધું.
વળી સિંહ જરા વાર બેઠો.
એવામાં એક પાડો નીકળ્યો.
સિંહે તેને પણ મારી નાંખ્યો.
થોડી વાર વળી સિંહ બેઠો. શિકાર ઠંડો થઇ ગયો. હવે ફાડી ખાવાની તૈયારી કરી. સિંહને વિચાર થયો. પહેલા સસલાનો શિકાર ખાઉં કે હરણનો ખાઉં ? આ પાડાને
પહેલો ખાઉં કે કેમ કરું? આમ વિચાર કરે છે એવામાં એક વરૂ નીકળ્યું.
સિંહે બૂમ પાડી : ઓ બે વરૂ...
સિંહદાદાની બૂમ સાંભળીને વરૂ કાંપવા માંડયું.
સિંહ કહે : બોલ, આ ત્રણમાંથી પહેલો શિકાર કોનો ખાઉં ?
વરૂને થયું કે પાડાનો શિકાર ખવાનું કહું. સિંહ ધરાઈ જશે. હરણ વધશે.
વરૂ બોલ્યું : આ પાડો જબરો છે. એનાથી આપનું પેટ ભરાઈ જશે.
સિંહ કહે : અને મારૃં પેટ પાડાથી ભરાઈ જાય તો આ સસલા અને હરણનું શું કરૂ ?
વરૂ કહે : મહારાજ, એ મને આપી દો ને ! આપને એક પાડો ઘણો છે.

આમ કહીને સિંહે એક પંજો મારી દીધો. વરૂભાઈ ખલાસ થઇ ગયા.
એક શિયાળ સંતાઈ રહેલું. તેણે આ બધું જોયું. શિયાળ ઝટ દઇને ચાલ્યું. સિંહે જોયું.
સિંહ કહે : ઓ શિયાળ ! કહે તો કે આમાંથી મારે પહેલું શું ખાવું ?
શિયાળ કહે : મહારાજ, આપ તો વનના રાજા છો. આવા સસલામાં ને હરણમાં પહેલો હાથ નાખે એ તો મામુલી કહેવાય. પહેલાં આપ પાડાને ખાઓ.
સિંહ કહે : અને પાડો ખાઈને હું ધરાઈ જાઉ તો આ હરણનું શું કરૃં ?
શિયાળ કહે : બપોરે નાસ્તો કરવા જોઇશે કે નહિ ? હરણને નાસ્તા માટે રાખો.
સિંહ કહે : એ વાત ખરી. અને આ સસલાનું શું કરૃં?
શિયાળ કહે : પછી સાંજ પડશે ને ? સાંજે સસલાનું વાળુ જમજો.
આ વાત સાંભળીને સિંહ ભારે રાજી થયો.
સિંહ કહે : શાબાશ છે તને. પેલું વરૂ તો મતલબી હતું. મારા શિકારમાંથી ભાગ માગતું હતું. તું મતલબી નથી. માટે તું બેસ. પાડાને હું ખાઈ જાઉં. તેમાંથી કંઇ વધે
તો તું લઇ જજે.
શિયાળ બેઠું : સિંહે પાડો ફાડી ખાધો. ત્યાં તો તદ્દન ધરાઈ ગયો.
સિંહ બોલ્યો : હવે તો મારે બપોરનો નાસ્તો પણ નહિ જોઇએ. સાંજે વાળુ પણ કરી શકીશ નહિ. માટે આ સસલું અને હરણ તું
લઇ જા.
સિંહ જતો રહ્યો.
શિયાળને સસલું અને હરણ મળી ગયા.
Two ઇન One
The Selfish Advice of the Fox
O nce there was a lion. He went out to hunt in the forest. As he walked, he came across a rabbit. The lion leapt - one blow from his paw - and the rabbit was dead.
He sat down after killing the rabbit.
Just then, a deer passed by.
The lion leapt again.
He pounced and took down the deer.
Again, the lion sat for a while.
Then a bull came by.
The lion killed it too.
After resting again, the lion's prey had cooled down.
He got ready to eat.
He thought, 'Should I eat the rabbit first, or the deer? Or should I begin with the bull?'
As he was thinking, a fox came along.
The lion roared, 'Hey, you fox!'
Hearing the lion's roar, the fox began to tremble.
The lion said, 'Tell me - which of these three should I eat first?'
The fox thought: If I suggest the bull, the lion will be full. He won't eat the others.
So the fox said, 'That bull is huge. It will fill your stomach nicely.'
The lion asked, 'And if I eat the bull and my stomach is full? What should I do with the rabbit and the deer?'
The fox said, 'Your Majesty, give those to me! One bull is enough for you.'
The lion grew furious.
He roared, 'You rascal! You want a share of my hunt? You're giving me advice that one bull will be enough. Are you trying to trick me and grab my food? Who are you to claim a part of my kill?'
Saying this, the lion struck with his paw.
Varubhai the fox was finished.
A jackal was hiding nearby. It had seen everything.
The jackal quickly started walking away.
The lion saw it.
He called out, 'Hey, jackal! Tell me - which one should I eat first?'
The jackal said, 'Your Majesty, you are the king of the jungle. Starting with the rabbit or deer is too ordinary for you. First, eat the bull.'
The lion asked, 'And what if I?m full after eating the bull? What about the deer?'
The jackal replied, 'You'll need a snack in the afternoon, won't you? Save the deer for that.'
The lion asked, 'True. And the rabbit?'
The jackal said, 'Evening will come, won't it? Enjoy the rabbit as your dinner then.'
Hearing this, the lion was very pleased.
He said, 'Well done! That other fox was selfish - he wanted a share of my prey. But you are not greedy. So sit here. I'll eat the bull. If anything is left, you may take it.'
The jackal sat.
The lion ate the bull. He was completely full.
The lion said, 'Now I don't even want the afternoon snack. And I can skip dinner too. So you take the rabbit and the deer.'
The lion left.
And the jackal got both the rabbit and the deer.
