- 1988માં જ્યારે અંજલિએ અમ્પાયરીંગની પરીક્ષા આપી ત્યારે 50 પુરુષ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ વચ્ચે તે એક માત્ર સ્ત્રી-વિદ્યાર્થિની હતી.
અંજલિ રાજગોપાલ ભારતીય ક્રિકેટની દુનિયાની પહેલી મહિલા અમ્પાયર છે, સાથે જ ૨૭ જેટલી કાંગા લીગ મેચોમાં અમ્પાયરીંગ કરી તેણે એ ક્ષેત્રમાં અનોખી કીર્તિ હાંસલ કરી છે.
ક્રિકેટની શોખીન અંજલિ, પહેલાં તો ક્રિકેટના નિયમો વિગતે શીખવા જ અમ્પાયરીંગના વર્ગો ભરવા લાગી હતી. પણ તેમાં તેને એટલી મજા પડી કે પછી તે એમાં આગળ વધતી જ રહી. ૧૯૮૮માં જ્યારે તેણે અમ્પાયરીંગની પરીક્ષા આપી ત્યારે ૫૦ પુરુષ વિદ્યાર્થીઓ વચ્ચે તે એક માત્ર સ્ત્રી-વિદ્યાર્થિની હતી. અમ્પાયરીંગના આ કૉચીંગ ક્લાસોમાં થિયરી અને પ્રેકિટકલ બંને વિભાગોમાં આકરો અભ્યાસ કરવો પડે છે અને જ્યારે મેચ ચાલુ હોય ત્યારે તો અમ્પાયરનો જીવ તાળવે જ ચોંટેલો હોય છે.
એકદમ સરસ રીતે પાસ થયેલી અંજલિ કહે છે, મારે માટે હજી રણજી ટ્રોફી તથા દેશવિદેશની ટેસ્ટ મેચોનું સ્વપ્ન દૂર છે, કેમકે બોમ્બે ક્રિકેટ ઍસોસિયેશનની પરીક્ષા માત્ર કાંગા લીગ તથા ટાઈમ્સ શિલ્ડ મેચો સુધી જવાની જ પરવાનગી આપે છે.
અમ્પાયર થવા છતાં અંજલિને ક્રિકેટ રમવું ગમતું. તે કહે છે, અમ્પાયર કરતાં ખેલાડીને જ ખ્યાતિ મળે છે, જ્યારે પૈસા મળવા લાગે છે ત્યારે પૈસા પણ વધુ મળે છે. સારી બોલીંગ બેટિંગ ફિલ્ડીંગનાં ઇનામો પણ હોય છે. જ્યારે સારામાં સારા અમ્પાયરીંગના કોઈ ઇનામો હોતા નથી.
૧૯૮૮માં તેને બોર્ડ ઓફ ક્રિકેટ ઇન ઇન્ડિયા (બી.સી.સી.આઈ.)ની મહત્વની પરીક્ષા જતી કરવી પડી, કેમ કે ભારતીય મહિલા ટીમ પાકિસ્તાન રમવા જતી હતી અને તેમાં અંજલિને સ્થાન મળ્યું હતું.
કાંગા લીગમાં અમ્પાયરીંગના એ જમાનામાં એક દિવસના રૃપિયા ૩૦ થી ૪૦ મળતા હતા. મેચ ચાલુ હોય ત્યારે જ આ કમાણી થાય. એની ઉપર કંઇ જીવન જીવી શકાય નહિ. અંજલિ એટલે જ પોતાનો અભ્યાસ આગળ ને આગળ ચાલુ રાખવા માગતી હતી.
અંધેરી કોલેજમાંથી જ ફાંકડું ક્રિકેટ રમતી અંજલિ, અગાઉ લખનઉ ખાતે ૧૯ વર્ષથી નીચેનાં મહિલા ખેલાડીઓની ટીમમાં રમી ચૂકી છે. તથા પૂણે ખાતેની પોલ્સન મહિલા ટ્રોફીમાં પણ રમી ચૂકી છે. દિલ્હી ખાતેની આંતર-ઝોનલ મહિલા ક્રિકેટ ચેમ્પિયનશીપની પણ તે એક આગવી ખેલાડી હતી.
અમ્પાયરીંગનું કામ કેટલું અઘરું છે એ વિશે અંજલિ કહે છે, 'વર્ષો સુધી સારી ફરજ બજાવો તેનું કંઈ નહિ પણ એક જ વખત ખોટો નિર્ણય આપી દો કે કારકીર્દિ જોખમમાં મૂકાઈ જ સમજો.'
મહિલા ક્રિકેટને ભારતમાં જોઈએ તેટલું મહત્ત્વ અપાતું નથી એ વિશે ફરિયાદ કરતાં અંજલિ કહે છે, 'બીજી મેચોની શી વાત કરવી ? નહેરુ વિશ્વ કપ જેવી ભારતીય મેચો માટે પણ વિદેશોના અમ્પાયરને આમંત્રણ અપાય છે, ત્યાં દેશના કે દેશી અમ્પાયરને તક જ વળી ક્યાં રહી ?' પણ અંજલિ ફરિયાદ કરીને બેસી ન રહી. બોલીંગ, બેટિંગ તથા ફિલ્ડીંગમાં એકધારી નિપુણતા ધરાવતી ઑલરાઉન્ડર એવી અંજલિ અમ્પાયરીંગ ક્ષેત્રે ઝઝૂમી ઝઝૂમીને પણ આગળ વધતી ગઈ. ૨૭ કાંગા તથા ટાઈમ્સ મેચોની અનુભવી અમ્પાયર અંજલિએ ક્યારેય પોતાના સપના સાથે બાં૦છોડ ન કરી.
આજે જ્યારે ભારતીય મહિલાઓ ઇન્ટરનેશનલ ક્રિકેટમાં ડંકો વગાડી રહી છે ત્યારે અંજલિ રાજગોપાલને સાદર વંદન.
India's First Female Cricket Umpire: Anjali Rajgopal
A njali Rajgopal is the first female umpire in the world of Indian cricket; additionally, by umpiring in about 27 Kanga League matches, she has achieved unique fame in that field.
Fond of cricket, Anjali initially started attending umpiring classes just to learn the rules of cricket in detail. But she enjoyed it so much that she kept moving forward in it. In 1988, when she took the umpiring exam, she was the only female student among 50 male students. In these coaching classes for umpiring, one has to study rigorously in both theory and practical sections, and when a match is ongoing, the umpire's life is hanging by a thread (is in a state of high tension).
Having passed excellently, Anjali says, "For me, the dream of Ranji Trophy and international Test matches is still far away, because the Bombay Cricket Association exam only grants permission to go as far as Kanga League and Times Shield matches."
Despite becoming an umpire, Anjali liked playing cricket. She says, "A player gets more fame than an umpire; when money starts coming, they also get more money. There are also prizes for good bowling, batting, and fielding. Whereas, there are no prizes for even the best umpiring."
In 1988, she had to let go of an important Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) exam because the Indian women's team was going to Pakistan to play, and Anjali had earned a place in it.
In those days, one would get 30 to 40 rupees per day for umpiring in the Kanga League. This income only happens when a match is ongoing. One cannot live a life based on that. That is why Anjali wanted to continue her studies further and further.
Anjali, who played impressive cricket from her Andheri college, has previously played in the under-19 women's team at Lucknow. She has also played in the Polson Women's Trophy at Pune. She was also a prominent player in the Inter-Zonal Women's Cricket Championship at Delhi.
Regarding how difficult the work of umpiring is, Anjali says, "It doesn't matter if you perform your duty well for years, but if you give a wrong decision just once, consider your career at risk."
Complaining about how women's cricket is not given as much importance as it should be in India, Anjali says, "What to say of other matches? Even for Indian matches like the Nehru World Cup, foreign umpires are invited; then where is the opportunity for the country's or local umpires?"
But Anjali did not just sit back after complaining. An all-rounder with consistent proficiency in bowling, batting, and fielding, Anjali kept moving forward in the field of umpiring by struggling hard. An experienced umpire of 27 Kanga and Times matches, Anjali never compromised on her dreams.
Today, when Indian women are making their mark in international cricket, a respectful salute to Anjali Rajgopal.
