- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!

- એક દિવસ આ પશુઓ અંદર અંદર લડી પડયાં. બધાં જ કહેતાં હતાં કે મારી દોડ સહુથી ઝડપી છે.શિયાળભાઈ કહે - 'ત્યારે લગાવો દોડ અને ખાતરી કરો કે સહુથી ઝડપી દોડ કોની છે?'
જં ગલના પશુઓને દોડવું પડે છે. કેટલાંકને શિકાર કરવા માટે દોડવું પડે છે. તો કેટલાંકને શિકારથી બચવા માટે દોડવું પડે છે. એક જમાનામાં પશુઓમાં ભારે એકતા હતી. ત્યારે કોઈ પશુ એકબીજાના દુશ્મન ન હતા.
તેમ છતાં બધાં વચ્ચે હુંસાતુંસી હતી જ. ચિત્તો કહેતોઃ 'હું સહુથી વધુ દોડી શકું છું.'
દીપડાભાઈને એવું ગુમાન હતું કે, સહુથી વધુ ઝડપથી તેઓ જ દોડે છે.
પાતળા પગવાળા હરણનું માનવું હતું કે સહુથી ઝડપી દોડ તેની જ છે.
જિરાફ પાસે તો ઊંચી ગરદન હતી, લાંબા પગ હતા, એટલે તે સહુથી આગળ રહે છે, એવી તેની ખાતરી હતી.
એક દિવસ આ પશુઓ અંદર અંદર લડી પડયાં. બધાં જ કહેતાં હતાં કે મારી દોડ સહુથી ઝડપી છે.
શિયાળભાઈ કહે - 'ત્યારે લગાવો દોડ અને ખાતરી કરો કે સહુથી ઝડપી દોડ કોની છે ?'
શરત નક્કી થઈ. બધાંએ જંગલના એક છેડેથી બીજે છેડે જઈને પાછું આવવાનું હતું.
શિયાળે એક દો તીન કહ્યું અને પશુઓ પૂરપાટ દોડવા લાગ્યાં.
ઘડીમાં ચિત્તો આગળ નીકળી જતો, ઘડીમાં દીપડો આગળ નીકળી જતો. એવામાં પાછળથી આવતું હરણ છલાંગો મારી સહુને પાછળ રાખી દેતું. જોતજોતામાં ચારે પગ ઉછાળતું જિરાફ એ તમામને પાછળ મૂકી દેતું.
જ્યારે દોડ બરાબર જામી ત્યારે વરસાદ તૂટી પડયો. તો પણ પશુઓની દોડ અટકી નહિ. વરસાદના કાદવ કિચડમાં એ પશુઓ જ રહ્યા. પણ હવે તેમને દોડવામાં તકલીફ પડતી હતી. તેમને લાગ્યું કે આસાનીથી આ શરત જીતી શકાશે નહિ.
વરસાદ વધી ગયો એટલે સહુ એક બીજાને પકડી પકડીને પાછળ રાખતાં. દીપડો હરણને પકડી રાખતો, હરણ જિરાફને આગળ વધવા દેતું નહિ, અને જિરાફ બીજા તમામના માર્ગો રોકીને ઉભું થઇ જતું.
દોડની વચમાંથી આમ થાપાબાજી શરૂ થઈ. એથી તમામના દેહ ઉપર જાત જાતની થાપો પડી ગઈ. મોટે ભાગે એ બધાં પગલાનાં નિશાનો હતા.
પાછળથી વરસાદ બંધ રહી ગયો. તેમના દેહ સુકાઈ ગયા. તેમ છતાં તેમના દેહ પરના આ નિશાન તો કાયમ રહી જ ગયા.
લડાલડી અને પકડા પકડીને લઈને તેમની દોડ કદી પૂરી થઈ નહિ. પણ તેમની વચમાં કાયમ દુશ્મનાવટ ઉભી થઈ ગઈ. એ પશુઓ આજે એક બીજાને જુએ છે તો ઘુરકાટ કરે છે અને ભાગાભાગી શરૂ કરી દે છે.
તેમના દેહ પરના નિશાનો આજે પણ આપણે જોઈ શકીએ છીએ.
I Am First
One day, these animals fought among themselves. Everyone was saying that their own run was the fastest. Brother Fox said: "Then start a race and make sure whose run is the fastest."
W ild animals have to run. Some have to run to hunt, while others have to run to escape from being hunted.
Once upon a time, there was great unity among the animals. Back then, no animals were enemies of each other.
Even so, there was a sense of rivalry among them all. The Cheetah used to say: "I can run the fastest of all."
Brother Leopard had the pride that he was the one who ran the most rapidly.
The slender-legged Deer believed that the fastest run belonged only to it.
The Giraffe had a high neck and long legs, so it was certain that it would stay ahead of everyone.
One day, these animals fought among themselves. Everyone was saying that their own run was the fastest.
Brother Fox said: "Then start a race and make sure whose run is the fastest."
The bet was decided. Everyone had to go from one end of the forest to the other and come back.
The Fox said one, two, three, and the animals began to run at full speed.
In one moment the Cheetah would go ahead, and in another moment the Leopard would go ahead. Meanwhile, the Deer coming from behind would leave everyone behind by leaping. In no time, the Giraffe, jumping with all four legs, would leave them all behind.
When the race was in full swing, rain broke out. Even then, the animals' race did not stop. Those animals remained in the mud and slush of the rain. But now they were having trouble running. They felt that this bet could not be won easily.
As the rain increased, everyone started holding each other back. The Leopard would hold the Deer, the Deer would not let the Giraffe move forward, and the Giraffe would stand blocking the paths of all the others.
In the middle of the race, this "slapping" (jostling) began. Because of this, various marks of slaps appeared on all of their bodies. For the most part, these were the marks of footprints.
Later, the rain stopped. Their bodies dried up. Nevertheless, these marks on their bodies remained forever.
Due to the fighting and grabbing, their race was never completed.
But a permanent enmity was created between them. Today, when those animals see each other, they growl and start running away.
We can still see the marks on their bodies today.
