When doctors perform surgery, they use chloroform to make the patient unconscious so they don’t feel pain. Operations can be very painful, and if the patient is awake, they may get scared or panic. In the past, surgeries were done without making the patient unconscious, and many people died because of the pain and shock.

James Young Simpson, a scientist, discovered the use of chloroform to help patients during surgery. After his discovery, surgeries became much easier and safer. Today, doctors use many methods to make patients sleep during operations. Before any surgery, a trained doctor called an anaesthetist gives the patient special medicine to make them unconscious.

James Simpson was born on June 7, 1811, in a village called Bathgate in Scotland. His father worked as an accountant in the Royal Bank. James came from a well-off family and was admitted to Edinburgh University at just 14 years old. He became a doctor at 18 and later, a professor — one of the youngest ever!

Simpson was always surrounded by scholars and loved learning. In 1847, he discovered that sniffing chloroform could temporarily make someone unconscious. He first tested it on himself and stayed unconscious for 12 hours! He passed away on May 6, 1870, but is remembered for his life-saving discovery. There are many memorials in his honor in England.
