- એક વાર્તા... બે ભાષામાં!
બા દશાહ અને બીરબલ ફરવા નીકળ્યા છે. જમૂનાના કિનારે દૂર દૂર નીકળી ગયા છે બાદશાહ બોલ્યા - હેં બીરબલ, અક્કલ મોટી યા ભેંશ? બીરબલ વિચારમાં પડયો કે, બાદશાહને એકાએક આવી વાત કેમ સૂઝી! અક્કલ મોટી યા ભેસ એ તો જુની કહેવત છે. એમાં પૂછવાનું શું હોય! નક્કી બાદશાહે કંઈ તરકીબ ગોઠવી હશે. એનો ઉત્તર પણ એવો જ આપવો જોઈએ.
બીરબલ બોલ્યો - હજુર મોટાની વાતો મોટા જાણે. હું તો આપની આગળ નાનો માણસ છું. જો અક્કલ મોટી ગણો તો તેની વાત આપ જાણો. કારણ કે આપ મોટા છો. ભેંશ મોટી હોય તો તે પણ આપ જ સમજી શકો.
બાદશાહ બીરબલના આ ઉત્તરથી મનમાં ઘણા રાજી થયા, પણ વિચાર આવ્યો કે બીરબલને જરા પાછો પાડવો જોઈએ.
બાદશાહ બોલ્યા - બીરબલ, અમે તો મોટા એટલે એ વાત જાણીએ છીએ જ, પણ તું બતાવ કે અક્કલ મોટી હોય તો ભેંશ કેવડી?
બીરબલ બોલ્યો - હજુર, પંડિતની વાતો પંડિત જાણે. બુદ્ધિમાનની વાતો બુદ્ધિમાન જાણે. તેમ ભેશ એ તો જાનવર છે. માટે જાનવરની વાતો જાનવર જાણે. હું શું જાણું?
બાદશાહ બોલ્યા - બીરબલ, તેં અમારૃં અપમાન કર્યું. તે અમને જાનવર કહ્યા. તને અમે સજા કરીશું.
બીરબલ કહે - આપ બાદશાહ છો, ચાહો તે સજા કરી શકો.
બાદશાહ કહે - તો જા, મારા રાજની ભૂમિ ઉપર તારે રહેવું નહીં.
બીરબલ સલામ ભરીને ચાલ્યો ગયો.
બીજા દિવસથી બીરબલ સભામાં આવતો બંધ થઈ ગયો. બાદશાહે તેને ઘેર તપાસ કરાવી તો માલુમ પડયું કે બીરબલ ઘેર નથી. એમ કરતાં મહિનો વીતી ગયો.
એક દિવસે બાદશાહ ઝરૂખામાં બેઠા છે ત્યાં મોટી ભીડ આવતી દેખાઈ. બાદશાહે સિપાઈને તપાસ કરવા મોકલ્યો. તપાસ કરીને સિપાઈ પાછો આવ્યો.
સિપાઈએ બાદશાહને કહ્યું - હજુર, એ તો બીરબલ છે. એક ગાડામાં ઝુંપડી બાંધી છે અને તેમા બીરબલ સાહેબ બેઠા છે. તે જોવા લોકોની ભીડ જામી છે.
બાદશાહ કહે - જાઓ બીરબલને બોલાવી લાવો.
સિપાઈ ગયો અને બીરબલને કહ્યું કે, બાદશાહ સલામત આપને બોલાવે છે.
બીરબલે કહ્યું - બાદશાહ સલામતને કહો કે, બીરબલ આવી શકે એમ નથી. જરૂર હોય તો બાદશાહ પોતે અહીં આવે.
આ વાત સાંભળીને બાદશાહને નવાઈ લાગી. બાદશાહ પોતે ઊઠીને બીરબલ પાસે ગયા. ગાડામાં ઝુંપડી અને તેમાં બીરબલ બેઠો છે.
બાદશાહ કહે - અરે બીરબલ, આ શો ખેલ છે?
બીરબલ કહે - હજુર, ખેલ નથી, પણ આપણી સજાનું પાલન કરૃં છું.
બાદશાહ કહે - અમે તો સજા કરી હતી કે, અમારા રાજની ભૂમિ ઉપર નહીં રહેવું.
બીરબલ કહે - તેથી તો મેં ઠેઠ અફઘાનિસ્તાનમાંથી માટી મંગાવી છે. તે આ ગાડામાં બીછાવી છે. તેના ઉપર આ ઝૂંપડી બાંધીને રહું છું. આપની ભૂમિ ઉપર હું પગ નથી મૂકતો.
બીરબલની આ ચતુરાઈ જોઈ બાદશાહ ઘણા રાજી થયા. હાથ પકડીને નીચે ઉતાર્યા.
બીરબલ બોલ્યો - હજુર, આપે કરેલી સજા તો મારે ભોગવવી જ પડશે.
બાદશાહ કહે - આ ચતુરાઈ જોઈને અમે તો તારી સજા માફ કરી.
બીરબલ કહે - પુરેપુરી સજા માફ કરી કે અધુરી?
બાદશાહ કહે - પુરેપુરી!
બીરબલ કહે - અત્યાર સુધી સજા અમે ભોગવી તેનો બદલો આપો. આપે તો પુરેપુરી સજા માફ કરી છે.
બાદશાહ કહે - જરૂર લો એનો બદલો.
બાદશાહે પોતાના ગળાનો હાર બીરબલના ગળામાં પહેરાવી દીધો.
Birbal Says
T he Emperor (Badshah) and Birbal went out for a stroll. They walked far, far away along the banks of the Yamuna River. The Emperor asked, "Hey Birbal, which is bigger, intelligence (Akkal) or a buffalo (Bhesh)?"
Birbal fell into thought, wondering why the Emperor suddenly brought up such a topic! "Intelligence or a buffalo?" is an old saying. What is there to ask about it? Surely the Emperor has devised some trick. His answer must also be just as clever. Birbal replied, "Your Majesty, big men know the answers to big questions. I am a small man before you. If you consider intelligence to be bigger, then you know the answer to that, because you are great. If the buffalo is bigger, you alone can understand that too."
The Emperor was very pleased with Birbal's answer but thought he should put Birbal in a tough spot. The Emperor said, "Birbal, since we are great, we already know the answer. But you tell us: If intelligence is bigger, how large is a buffalo?"
Birbal replied, "Your Majesty, wise men know the matters of the wise, and intelligent men know the matters of the intelligent. Similarly, a buffalo is an animal. Therefore, animals know the matters of animals. What would I know?"
The Emperor said, "Birbal, you have insulted us. You called us an animal. We will punish you." Birbal said, "You are the Emperor; you can give any punishment you wish." The Emperor said, "Then go! You must not live on the land of our kingdom."
Birbal saluted and walked away.
From the next day, Birbal stopped coming to the court. The Emperor ordered an inquiry at his house and found that Birbal was not home. A month passed in this manner.
One day, the Emperor was sitting in his balcony (Jharokha) when he saw a large crowd approaching. The Emperor sent a soldier to investigate. The soldier returned after checking. The soldier told the Emperor, "Your Majesty, that is Birbal. He has built a hut on a bullock cart, and Mr. Birbal is sitting inside it. A crowd has gathered to see this."
The Emperor said, "Go, call Birbal here." The soldier went and told Birbal that the respected Emperor was summoning him.
Birbal replied, "Tell the respected Emperor that Birbal cannot come. If it is necessary, the Emperor himself should come here." Hearing this, the Emperor was surprised. The Emperor himself got up and went to Birbal. The hut was on the cart, and Birbal was sitting inside it.
The Emperor asked, "O Birbal, what kind of game is this?" Birbal said, "Your Majesty, it is not a game, but I am carrying out the punishment you gave me." The Emperor said, "We punished you by saying you must not live on the land of our kingdom." Birbal said, "That is why I have sent for soil all the way from Afghanistan. It is spread out on this cart. I have built this hut on top of it and live here. I am not stepping on your land."
Seeing Birbal's cleverness, the Emperor was very pleased. He took his hand and helped him down.
Birbal said, "Your Majesty, I must endure the punishment you decreed."
The Emperor said, "Seeing your cleverness, we forgive your punishment."
Birbal asked, "Did you forgive the entire punishment or only part of it?" The Emperor said, "The entire punishment."
Birbal said, "Then give me compensation for the punishment I have suffered until now. You have forgiven the entire punishment, after all."
The Emperor said, "Of course, take your compensation."
The Emperor took the necklace from his own neck and placed it around Birbal's neck.
