When Physics Feels Heavy, Let Hobbies Lift You

H i. I have a problem with studying physics. I cannot focus on the subject for more than half an hour. It is not that I do not understand the concepts, because I carefully go through my tuition notes. However, when I try to solve questions, I get stuck and feel very low. I do share my doubts with my teachers and they help me, yet I still feel that I am lacking something.

I am now in Class 11 and I love drawing, working out, and playing. These hobbies make me feel happy and peaceful, but due to my study pressure I hardly get any time for them. I understand that Class 11 and 12 are important for my career. However, does that mean I must ignore all the things I enjoy? I want to give proper time to my studies as well as my hobbies.  What should I do?

- Shikha (Ahmedabad)

Dear Shikha, you sound like a bright spark trying to shine in every direction at once. Physics may be giving you a headache right now, yet your message reveals curiosity, honesty, and determination. That means half your battle is already won.

Physics is like that one friend who always talks in riddles. At first you think, "Why so complicated?" Then slowly, when you crack the joke, you start laughing with it. Your "brain hurting" is not a weakness. It is your brain doing gym workout. You lift a tough concept, the brain sweats a little, and after a few sessions, it becomes stronger.

Here is a colourful toolkit to help you conquer physics while still dancing with your hobbies.

Break Physics into Bite-Sized Fun

Studying physics for long stretches is not necessary. Try the Pomodoro technique:

 25 minutes of physics

5 minutes of a mini break

Four such cycles and then a bigger joyful break.

During your 25 minutes, do not worry about solving everything. Just wrestle one small idea at a time. If the concept is understood but questions trouble you, solve only three problems of the same type repeatedly. Your brain will slowly get the pattern.

Think of physics problems like puzzles in a treasure hunt. Solving one means "level up."

Hobby Time is Brain Fuel

Your hobbies are not a distraction. They are refresh buttons. Drawing improves creativity. Workouts energise you. Playing builds teamwork and joy. When you do these things, your brain becomes ready to absorb physics better.

Create a balanced timetable:

Two physics sessions of 25 minutes each per day

45 minutes for drawing or playing

20 minutes for a quick workout or dance

Suddenly, you are doing what you love and also tackling physics like a pro.

Celebrate Small Wins

Solve one tough question? Reward yourself.

Understood a confusing concept? Smile and take a victory lap around the house.

Each tiny step matters. Great scientists also struggled. Einstein was not Einstein at 16.

Ask Smarter, Not More

You already ask your teachers. Excellent. Now, before asking them, try to write down where you get stuck. The moment you identify the exact "road bump," the teacher's help becomes a power booster.

You can also study in a silly playful manner: explain the concept to your pillow, your pet, or your favourite toy. Teaching makes the idea stick to your brain like Fevicol.

Laugh at the Problems

If a question goes "Ha ha, got you!" You say, "Wait, I am reloading my brain!"

Do not attach your self-worth to performance. You are a universe of talent. Physics is just one planet inside it. A planet cannot decide the entire universe's value.

You Are Not Falling Behind. You Are Growing

Feeling low does not mean failure. It means you care. Only people with dreams feel pressure. Others simply float.

You are in Class 11, not in a race with superheroes. Everyone is figuring out life. Give yourself permission to be human, to be imperfect, and to learn slowly.

Magic formula to remember: Consistency beats intensity

Little by little, every day, wins the game.

A Night Message for You

If at the end of the day you feel you are "nothing," ask:

Did I try today?

Did I learn something small?

Did I give myself love?

If the answer to even one is yes, you are winning.

You are a work-in-progress masterpiece. The universe has not finished painting you yet.

Final Words

Draw your dreams in bold colours. Run with energy. Laugh with friends. Enjoy physics like a mystery novel. No subject is bigger than your happiness. Studies can shine brighter when joy holds the torch. You have everything it takes to fly high in life. Physics will not stop you. It might even join you on the way.  All the best!
