The bodily structure and traits of humans, animals, birds, and plants are hereditary. Every living organism has its own lineage. The study of this field is called genetics. The foundation of this science was laid by Gregor Mendel. Following this discovery, genes and DNA were discovered. This research made the treatment of many diseases possible and started a separate branch of genetic science. Mendel was born in Austria on July 20, 1822.
During his childhood, he worked to take care of fields and gardens. He started his career after receiving higher education in philosophy and physics from the University of Olomouc. Research regarding plant lineage was being conducted in the university's natural history department. Mendel studied there and simultaneously became a priest. After becoming a priest, his name was kept as Gregor. He joined a church in Vienna as a priest. Staying at St. Thomas's Church, he continued doing research by breeding honeybees and cultivating plants. He grew around 29,000 pea plants, discovered that they maintain specific laws of inheritance, and wrote a research essay. Initially, he faced criticism and no one accepted his ideas. He passed away on January 6, 1884. Later, after 1900, when a lot of research took place in the field of biology, Mendel's research was found to be correct, and his principles were accepted worldwide.
