Many methods have been discovered to investigate human diseases, but the modern MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technique is the most efficient. An MRI machine provides detailed images of the internal parts of the body. This imaging method is useful for complete check-ups and diagnosing fatal diseases like cancer. The MRI machine was invented by a scientist named Raymond Damadian.
Raymond Vahan was born on March 16, 1936, in New York, USA. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, he obtained an M.D. degree from Albert Einstein College. Based on the principle that potassium and sodium in living bodies react to magnetic fields, he conducted experiments and designed a method to take internal images of the body using magnetic fields.
He created a machine and announced that this method could identify cancer tumors. In 1977, he succeeded in diagnosing cancer using his MRI machine. He received many honors in America for this discovery. He founded the Fonar Company to manufacture MRI machines. He was awarded the National Medal of Technology, the Bower Award, and the Bioscience Innovation Award. In 2003, his name became a subject of controversy regarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
